The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the internship and really enjoyed spending 4 weeks with one team so that I could get stuck into tasks. I learnt a great deal during the month and enjoyed the events that Savills put on for us including the city tours, socials with other interns and departmental overviews. This gave me a great insight into the company and meant that I met other students going through the same process as me.
I felt very valued as the tasks that I was given to do were actually ones that they needed doing rather than being made up to give me some work to do. The team made sure that I had a seat on their teams desk in the first few weeks so that I was integrated with them.
I was given a lot of support and my colleagues were all easily approachable if I needed any help or clarification on a task. I worked closely with an associate mentor and a placement student. They both made me feel welcome and were very happy to sit down with me and give me some of their time to go over a task.
I always had a task to be getting on with as I was given a couple of overall projects to complete over the four weeks spent at Savills. I was also given short immediate tasks to do. The team were never struggling to think of something for me to do, so I did not feel as though I was a burden on them.
I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was asked to lead on a few tasks as so worked alongside Business Development to get those completed. I was also tasked to put together a capability brochure for Jeremy Bates, who has a high profile meeting in USA that he needed them for.
Communication - as I had to liaise with other Savills employees across the European Offices Excel - I used to excel to put together a number of reports and learn how to use it to work out a cash flow. Writing - I wrote a few blogs and wrote these in the same style that is used by other blogs on the savills website Networking - Savills put on a fee earner lunch for us
The Company
Relaxed and approachable. People were constantly on the phones ringing up who ever they needed to contact. Employees just wander around the office to talk to everyone. Good amount of non work related chat. Have breakdown areas for employees to relax and have less formal meetings.
very well organised. We got a list of everyone on it, our key contact and graduate mentor before we arrived as well as a schedule for the month. Departmental overviews, networking lunch and intern social activities were already organised for us. HR were great at making sure that I was enjoying my time and I had an appraisal with them at the end of the second weel
I got shown how to use Costar and Tableu - though I only know the basics of how to use these software's. The team made sure that I understood everyone's roles within it and made sure that I was doing tasks which I enjoyed and asked me what I wanted to learn more about - such as giving me a cash flow.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - Savills offers many graduate scheme jobs and most employees have worked their way up through the company. They also have employed many people onto the grad scheme off the back of the summer internship. The appraisal that is done for each summer intern also offers the director to send them straight to the grad scheme assessment centre.
The Culture
Yes - there was 20 of us on the summer scheme in London. Savills put on a social on the second day for us and a rounders match in Hyde Park on the third week. I really enjoyed getting to know the other interns and graduates who I got to talk to a lot about the industry and what they have liked about working at Savills. One graduate also contacted me from seeing that I went to her school.
I was living at home so did not have to pay rent, but know that the cost of rent in London is expensive. Going out in the surrounding area is not cheap, so I was spending quite a bit doing that. But Savills paid us for the month so all my living costs were offset.
Good, property is a sociable industry and Savills has a lot of young workers who are keen to enjoy the nightlife so I was able to get involved in it, if I so wished to. Savills has a good approach to an ideal work life balance and on a Friday they have a drinks trolley that comes around the office at 4pm.
Savills have a lot of sports teams; mixed hockey, rugby, football, tennis, but I did not get involved in them during my time and didn't hear about any ways to do so as a summer intern, though I am sure more would be on offer if I was to join Savills on the graduate programme.
