    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Had an absolutely fantastic time. It was structured with projects set out from the beginning. Moreover, I was allocated to a team with a manager to report into. I was made to feel part of the team, attending weekly meetings and being involved in ongoing projects. Not only was the organization super, but there were numerous events organized by HR such as Senior Networking drinks and Intern socials. My manager also gave me the chance to come to a number client meetings, an opportunity not all firms can offer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so. They involved me in their ongoing projects so that I could do work that was actively added to their work's progression.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I sat next to or nearby my manager all summer and had two meetings a week with her. These meetings involved talking about my work, giving me areas to improve as well as general catch ups. No question was considered silly.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy. From arriving at 7:45-8:00am to when I usually left around 6:30pm it was non-stop. A mixture of client meetings, internal sales meetings, project work, internal networking comprised my daily routine. I wouldn't even have time to check my phone.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Naturally it is difficult to give a Sales intern lots of responsibility as they are legally not allowed to talk to clients. However, I was given a number of opportunities to take part in projects that were supporting client work.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had finished my degree by the time I started my internship.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very collaborative. I worked on the 6th Floor, which was a trading floor, so everyone was always standing up and walking around to talk to people. I learnt from an early stage that you couldn't hide behind emails and the best way to get something done was to go and approach someone in person.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Extremely well organized. I have already outlined how prepared HR and my team were for the arrival of the interns.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invested heavily in the interns as they realize this is their main source of Graduate roles. We were given a whole week of specific training to start and offered online training when we arrived. During the internship workshops were organized with us with product specialists to improve our knowledge of the different product areas. Likewise we were given soft skills training as well.

    5/5

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The internship is a pipeline for graduate employment

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there were 20 interns in Investor Services, we went for drinks and socialized in the office at lunch a lot.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary Wharf is reasonably expensive. Around £5 for a pint or glass of wine. I did not live there however so cannot comment on that aspect.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not as good as the City, but there are numerous bars in Canary Wharf

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. The firm has a number of sports clubs available and the corporate challenge, which takes place halfway through the summer, is a great event.
