The Role
The internship is a great opportunity to build a network and find out what motivates and interests you in the banking sector. Over the 9 weeks you can immerse yourself into your designated role but also make time to find out about other divisions and their functions. Overall, it's been an invaluable learning experience and is extrememely impactful in building one's work ethic.
Team is extremely integral to how enjoyable one finds work and I was fortunate enough to have an extremely supportive team who would provide constnat guidance and extended a deep sense of inclusion. I was entrusted with meaningful work and it reinforces that sense of belonging.
My manager was extremely invested in my development and learning and would actively monitor my progress. The team members were extremely approachable and took time out to bring me up to speed if they identified any area of development.
The days were kept fairly occupied, if not by direct work, then by Speaker Sessions, Director Meets and Group Projects.
I was given a long-term project to oversee and push along for the entirety of my internship, which allowed me to shape it over the 9 weeks instead of having a superficial interaction with different pieces of work. Since I was actively monitoring the project, I was extrememly involved in communicating Management Information and hence had a broad range of tasks to oversee.
I think therre is strong growth in interpersonal skills and a bit of Excel skills, but major development comes from adapating to new systems and working in teams.
The Company
There is a great sense of community and team spirit at work and it's easy to work with people across desks.
Extremely organised. there was always someone to troubleshoot queries and a lot of pre-meditative effort was made to ensure we were set up properly.
We had basic training on banking and Barclays and had complete access to the online academy. Learning is extremely encouraged with different sessions at all points in time but the bulk of training and learning happens on the job.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Extremely appealing. There's great mobility across Barclays as a whole and the Graduate schemes are structured to accommodate that.
The Culture
Group projects mean we work closely with the cohort and hence have opportunities to have social outings and build a good rapport with the team.
Lunch across most places in Canary Wharf would fall in £6-£8 range and is representative of costs of eating out in general.
Canary Wharf has a great array of bars and pubs to make the most of.
There are many employee networks, most notable of which was the WiN- Women's Initiiative Network- promotes opportunities for women and integral to the workplace. Barclays has a committed CSR programme and we had multiple Volunteering events.
