The Role
I very much enjoyed my 10 weeks at LBG within Commercial Banking Legal. It was a good length of time to really get involved with the business and get involved with projects from start to finish.
The team I was working within were fantastic: extremely welcoming and friendly. I truly believe they got the balance just right between help & support and letting me use my initiative to sort out problems by myself and run with my ideas. I was in a team of 4 others, however, the Legal team within my office was approx. 40 people. All were incredibly helpful and were willing to take time out of their diaries to let me have an insight into each of their teams. As a result, I was able to gain a much broader experience than simple the role I was allocated.
My line manager (and the rest of the team) were great at giving me support and guidance throughout my 10 weeks. They were always readily available to help me if I had questions or needed further support. My line manager set up a weekly meeting with me to discuss my work, any issues, problems or questions I had.
This definitely varied: some days my diary would be jam packed and others I would have very little on. I think this is similar in all internships though as your skills are obviously limited for the role (particularly within law).
Having completed internships both in private practise and in-house law firm roles, I was really impressed with the amount of responsibility I was given. This was both challenging and daunting but once I realised the support I had, it became a really exciting task.
Going into my final year of my law degree and looking towards my future, the people around me at Lloyds have been happy to discuss a whole manner of topics and answer my questions openly and honestly. The work I have been completing has been excellent and I have really ticked that box of 'commercial awareness' that so many employees are looking for. I have definitely advanced my skills, knowledge and experience and had a great 10 weeks whilst doing so.
The Company
Fantastic, everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Everyone is very hard working and there was very much a team spirit which made it a great environment to contribute to.
The initial set up of the application process is incredibly streamlined and the graduate talent team/scholars team work very hard to allocate you to your chosen stream - where you are then asked to contact your line manager as the first step. When completing the internship there are weekly reviews and a balance scorecard which need to be completed which helps provide structure and guidance to both interns and line managers.
The company definitely invested in me, and I was invited to numerous training days with the team or alone. I was able to go to London to meet some incredibly senior employees and the opportunities to network were invaluable.

If I wished to continue to work at Lloyds after graduating then this would be a lot easier than having not completed the internship: the referral process from line managers will be completed next week therefore I do not know whether I will receive a referral.
The Culture
Many of the interns were housed together which gave you the opportunity to meet friends in a new city very easily. There were numerous nights out and events for the interns (set up by the interns) and we all got along really well.
If you are not from the city (or within 1 hour traveling distance) Lloyds will provide accommodation for the 10 week internship which dramatically reduces costs. Edinburgh can be an expensive city, however there is not huge distances to travel (most of Edinburgh is relatively walkable) and the fringe festival is on during the summer placements which adds to the atmosphere.
Good
Yes - both with interns and with colleagues
