The Role
Very good overall experince. Learnt a huge amount about bank liquidity, wholesale funding markets, secured and unsecured debt as well as having the opportunity to sit with credit and rates traders.
Extremely. Was given huge responsibility which is quite rare for interns to have. I was the one submitting final reports to the BoE. This responsibility made me feel like an integral part of the team.
I was expected to do a lot of self teaching, however, this is not neccessarily a bad thing. The learning curve was much steeper and this is great. I learnt good skills like adaptability and organisation.
It fluctuated. I started the week after the Brexit vote hence our regulatory reporting had to be done on a daily rather than weekly basis (on orders from the BoE).
Massive amounts. As mentioned earlier, I was given the responsibility of submitting to the BoE and also sending out other different types of reports. However, this amount of responsibility is extremely rare for an intern at Barclays to have.
I think the biggest skill I developed was networking. This is vital since at the end of the day everyone is smart and hence what seperates you is the relationships you have with people rather than your ability.
The Company
While the atmosphere was good, it didn't suit my style. I prefer more active atmospehres (my team was too quiet) - I would prefer a team where we have to constantly adapt and work as a much closer unit to achieve our goals. However, I guess this is just about prefernece.
The only thing that may be criticised is the lack of formal training. In saying that I mush preferred how it was set up since I like to self teach.
I would certainly work here depending on the team/division I am offered.
