The Role
I really enjoyed my internship, i think the Grad Recruitment team did a great job of planning activities, events and talks with various members of the company whether it was the CEO, Director or Managing Directors. The even integrated a lot of citizenship tasks and projects in the internship programme, which enabled us to work alongside our peers and work with many different charities and companies.
I felt extremely valued by my team and colleagues! I was given many responsibilities, trusted with projects and task and given the opportunity to work with people across the division as well as within my team. I received constant feedback, on a weekly basis from my line manager to ensure I was on track, provided with tips and advice on progress and areas to improve on.
I was given a lot of support, although my manager encouraged me to try to get on with tasks independently, which I did. I was always able to confidently ask for help and it was always provided. It can always be daunting joining a new team or company but the one advice I would give is ASK, ASK and ASK again. Someone will always stop to guide you on back on track.
The first 5 weeks were extremely busy! I had been assigned a project to work on independently the deadline was looming and I had to manage my time between attending events and activities and meeting my deadline for my project, which is a task in itself. The last 4 weeks were less busy as I had then submitted my project, but this allowed me to work on month end task, daily tasks, and working with my colleagues more. I was always asking for more work and where there was no tasks available, I was arranging meeting and networking with colleagues across Barclays to keep myself busy which my manager also encouraged.
I was given a lot of responsibility, which was very surprising. The project I was working on was being delivered to Senior Members of Barclays, so my manager had a lot of trust in me to deliver and I had to hit the ground running, because as soon as I joined the team I was given the project. I was guided through the task, but after that it was all on me and it was a great challenge and to see the changes you can make on systems and knowing you have improved or added value is a great feeling.
I studied Financial Derivatives and the area I was working in was very much focused on that. It helped me understand my course more, I was building hedges, analyzing trades and working on month end tasks. It was very relevant to my studies and having that practical experience is very beneficial.

I would love to work here, the work life balance is great, they support you through your studies and provide you with advice and help where needed. That is a company i want to work for.
The Culture
Yes! We always tried to meet up after work and go out outside of work so it was great, as well as barclays arranging our leaving event etc was also good.
I stayed at home so it was not costly for me
Canary wharf is really a hot spot in terms of night life, but the bars are open fairly late and its always packed so its great, but shoreditch and near by club and bars is where we would ususally go
Always! Barclays is keen on ensuring their staff are taking part in citizenship, i worked with charities, companies, had sports days and fun days out with the team and peers.
