    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • A friendly environment along with enjoyable and challenging work.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was always included in discussions, the work I was given was always interesting and varied and I never felt as though I was put aside because of being an intern.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was quite a lot of contact time with management, they also listened to what you said and were very helpful. The early career development advisors at Rolls-Royce are very good at giving guidance and support both during and outside the placement.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work given to me was open ended and so all I could do was provide support to the projects. The workload however was just about right, there was always something to do once I had settled in. The workload could increase quite a lot on occassion meaning some overtime was required.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was left to work on the main project alone regularly with weekly meetings being the only supervision at times. There was a lot of support however if sought after. As with most things the more responsibility or work you ask for the more you get.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I improved my physical modeling skills and also my knowledge of the Matlab/Simulink computer program. In addition to this I now understand better how projects should be run. These skills will be directly applicable to my final year, with the project skills being the most useful due to my final year project.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A friendly atmosphere with quite a serious attitude at times, everyone was very helpful.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • When I arrived I had a project laid out for me, ready for me to dive into. Unfortunately my manager was absent for the first few days so I was unable to start straight away but I took this time to settle in, see the site and get admin sorted.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • During my time at the company I attended a training session in order to improve my understanding of jet engines, there are also many opportunities at the company to develop skills which the company will fund. Due to my short time with the company I was unable to take advantage of these.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have been offered a job on the Professional Excellence scheme with the company.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other interns were very sociable, with a lot of events being organised outside of work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Bristol is a really great place to live, I lived in some of the student accomodation during my summer placement which was quite cheap. I lived with other interns who worked at Rolls-Royce so car sharing was quite useful. Socialising was about the same or cheaper than I find in other areas of the country.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is a lot going on in Bristol, I would fully recommend it if is nightlife you are looking for.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Rolls-Royce has a society which organises quite a lot outside of work. Among the interns we organised quite a lot, there are also sports teams which are easy to get involved with.
