The Role
The internship was a lot of fun- there were serveral opportunities to meet people and learn about their work
I could see how my work was directly contributing to the project, and this felt very rewarding. In fact, very often my team members would express their gratitude for the work I was doing.
My manager met me for a formal meeting every week, but other than that I was comfortable walking over to his desk in case I had any questions, and needed any help. The managers I worked with on projects were always around me, or just an email/ phone call away. I felt I was guided through the internship quite well.
I had enough work to keep me occupied every day- not overly busy, so I could leave on time in the evenings, but I did experience the occasional late nights where I needed to stay past 8 pm to finish work for a client.
Most of my work was quickly skimmed through, but no one felt the need to sit through it and look for typos. As the internship proceeded, the level of independence I was given with the work increased and I felt more "in-charge" of the work I was being assigned.
No particular skills I learned during the internship will be particularly helpful for my degree- although, basic skills such as presenting, and building a good work ethic will definitely come in handy at university too.
The Company
When they say the culture of a firm defines the experience you'll have there, they're absolutely right. The collaborative and supportive atmosphere at KPMG was the perfect place for me to thrive. The open floor plan at the Canary Wharf office made for a very energetic and constantly buzzing atmosphere.
Although I had a great time at my internship, I have to say that it was not particularly well organised. A lot of interns didn't have enough work to do- I didn't either in the beginning. I soon realised, though, that talking to more people was the best way to get work- and I networked my way onto projects to get more work and responsibility. However, since the internship is so short, I definitely think having a more structured internship with pre-assigned projects would have been more productive.
We had a few online training sessions and could use the online KPMG school to learn about any service line/ skill we were interested in but no specific "personal training" sessions were organised.
Subsidised Canteen
I'd be very happy to go back and work for KPMG if I were to receive an offer.
The Culture
Although KPMG didn't organise too many socials (just one to Brooklyn Bowl), the interns had a facebook group that we used to facilitate socials and other events we organised ourselves.
We were working in Canary Wharf, so most places were edging towards the expensive side, but there was a Wetherspoons which was quite cheap. Lunch is subsidised and you get a £3.20 lunch allowance which means you don't spend too much on lunch anyway.
Canary Wharf was always buzzing after work, with people leaving to go out and get drinks. Often, I'd go out with my team for a couple of drinks after work!
None that I got involved in because I was there for a short time- although they have several networks for their employees to join.
