The Role
I really enjoyed my time with KPMG. Everyday was a nice opportunity to learn something different.
My colleagues were very helpful and always made me feel welcome. I was instantly made to feel welcome and invited to many social events.
Depending on the client and manager, some managers were very hands-on in their approach to setting up everything and some were not. It all depended on the individual. However if I had any problems or issues, my buddy and PM were more than happy to help me figure it out.
So this varied on a weekly basis and a client basis. My first two weeks were very jam packed as I was working with a client that had a lot of entities. The remaining weeks passed by more smoothly as sometimes the clients didn't deliver or there was an issue that would have to be sorted out before I could be given any work. This wasn't a problem as when I ran out of things to do I simply asked around the office to see if anyone had any extra work for me. Everyone I asked was more than happy to help me out!
From the start you're given a lot of responsibility as you're working from the client site. This means that you have to interact with clients as well as their data. However how much actual "audit work" you're given depends on who the manager is and what other tasks you have experience doing.
The technical skills I developed will assist me in being able to fit in within my future audit career. I also developed communication skills from chatting to clients as well as colleagues and managers on a daily basis.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very cheerful. Everyone knew each other quite well and as a new joiner I was included in the conversations that fluctuated from swimming to chickens. It was an enjoyable part of the whole experience as the people on the office were always pleasant and a joy to be around
Everything was well organised to a certain extent. I always knew where I had to be and at what time so I was pretty pleased with that.
In this aspect I was very surprised at how much the company invested in me given that I was only a vacation scheme student. I was given a new laptop aswell as access to their eTravel, time tabling system and expense system. This meant that I could do what the other members of the team were doing and there wasn't anything I couldn't do because I was a vacation scheme student. I was also taught many valuable technical skills that will serve me well with my career with the company. I was able to ask anyone from any tank questions about their experience and how to get the job done and they were more than willing to help me out.

After completing the vacation scheme I am excited at the prospect of working with the company. At the end of my scheme I had a partner interview and I was informed afterwards that I had passed. This is great news as it means I have been offered a place on their graduate programme. It also takes a lot of pressure off my final year as I can relax knowing that I can finish university and go on to work for a great company that I like after having had a trial with them.
The Culture
There was always an event on. From office away days to bowling meet-ups. There was always a chance to get involved. The social scene amongst the team was very active. I liked that there was something everyone could get involved with
I stayed in Cambridge for the scheme and it was a little pricey but the money I earned from the scheme meant that I was able to afford socialising and living in that area.
Cambridge has a great nightlife and there's great variety in terms of eateries etcera. However suring the summer, the clubs are a lot quieter as the majority of the students have left the campus
As a vacation scheme student I was immediately able to join in with any events the company organised outside of work. After speaking with some of the grad students I know that KPMG employees have a few days each year set aside for volunteering and other CSR activities, which is a great bonus.
