The Role
I worked in Supervision, specialising in general insurance and protection, working on the risk framework. With this not being my first choice of department, I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting my tasks have been. I've learnt so much about insurance and have been given so much exposure to senior managers/heads of departments as well as firms.
I have been given so much responsibility - it's been great. My project for the 10 weeks has been to create a risk framework pack which will be presented to all heads of departments across general insurance as well as managers and other representatives from different departments. This process has involved me liaising with stakeholders across the whole of the FCA, presenting my ideas to different teams and meeting deadlines. At first, I struggled with some of the insurance terminology, but my colleagues have been very patient and supportive. Like all internships, a lot of your knowledge is very learn on the job,
My manager has been so supportive and has helped whenever I've asked. Especially as I was sat next to her on a daily basis!
Everyday was different. Some weeks I would be working flat out - getting into the office for 8am and leaving at 7pm. Other weeks would be quiet and I'd just be working the standard 9am-5pm. Every role is different and it purely depends on deadlines/work load at the time.
I have been the sole producer of the risk framework in my team. I feel like I've really achieved something as it will actually be used by all stakeholders within my department.
Time management is definitely a big one here/meeting deadlines/multi-tasking.
The Company
Friendly and hard working. The atmosphere has been really nice and I've always felt I could ask anyone for help when I've needed it - everyone's always happy to help you with your work. Also, it's nice that managers/heads of departments are happy to sit with their teams - makes them more approachable and human!
My manager outlined my objectives at the start of my internship so I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve by the end of the 10 weeks. I've never been short of work.
The FCA are a great company to work for. They want you to get as much as you can out of the internship. I didn't understand the role of Lloyd's of London within insurance so they organised a tour for me and another intern to attend which was probably one of my highlights.

The Culture
The interns always arranged to have lunch together and we organised drinks regularly and went bowling too!
Expensive. This is Canary Wharf. That really didn't phase me too much though as we were getting paid and London is so much fun.
Again expensive but great on a Thursday and Friday in Canary Wharf - always buzzing
Sports and social club - you could buy tickets for the theatre, ascot races, walks around london, ski trips, have language lessons within FCA, sports clubs etc. I had Italian lessons every Tuesday lunchtime for a subsidised price.
