The Role
I have very much enjoyed my internship at Softwire. I have worked at Softwire West in Bristol for 8 weeks and have learnt so much that will help me in my final year project and future career. Softwire is a very social and generous company with everyone being very friendly, as well as the company having regular after work events and gatherings such as going to the cinema and playing board games.
I have felt like my colleagues have valued my input and suggestions, listening and weighing up what I have to say. Though of course my experience is much less than theirs and they always corrected me when I was wrong, allowing me to learn and progress. I was never dismissed out of turn for being an intern.
The support is brilliant at Softwire, the friendliness and open plan office allows you to ask anyone for help, As well as the informal aggregation of knowledge and skill this puts at anyone's disposal, you can easily email across all Softwire offices. For personal development each person has a line manager who they can talk to at any point about personal problems and development, as well as there being status chats and emails.
I was kept busy with enough work and variety to interest and motivate me every day.
I was given responsibility that I thought appropriate to my skill, I felt treated as a usual employee and produced a fair amount of code that was deployed to production for clients.
I have learnt many skills that will greatly help me in the future. Although Softwire has a relaxed atmosphere, they are very professional in their work and what they produce is held up to a high standard of quality and correctness. I feel like these have been the most important lessons I have learnt, with all code being continually reviewed and peer support always being available.
The Company
Very friendly and generally quite relaxed, but everyone is very motivated and professional in what they do.
Very well, the start brought everyone up to the same level with training and talks, and then each intern took a different path, being placed into different work groups and working on client requested work.
The company spent a lot of time training us and when we worked on our own projects in pairs we each had a mentor that continually helped us work with problems and advised us.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
They have everything I could want and Softwire West is a small company who are growing rapidly allowing for many opportunities.
The Culture
There was a very active social side to the company with regular events and gatherings after work as well as picnics and the occasional party.
I have been living in the centre of Bristol and it is very cheap considering it is the centre of a city.
The nightlife is vibrant and varied with all sorts of places to go, a comedy gig, a theatre show, loads of pubs and bars as well as clubs aplenty.
There are many opportunities around with many sports facilities such as squash courts and climbing walls as well as festivals and museums.
