The Role
I absolutely loved my internship, from the work I was doing to the people I met, it was great. The internship is structured really well, with a lot of support and guidance, as well as a lot of opportunities. You can get involved with so many different things, from intern fundraising to workshops to improve your CV.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues, they would always answer any of the many questions I had, and made me feel part of the team throughout. When I was working on bigger projects, or managing meetings, I felt as though I was truly part of the team, and that my opinion and thoughts were valid and valued. I also had team members telling other teams about the work I carried out - which was great and showed me my work was also valued by them.
I felt fully supported throughout my internship from my manager. We had weekly 1:1 sessions where we would discuss the work I had done, work to do for the next week and my personal development. On top of this, he would always be available for me to ask questions if there was something I needed further information for. My manager was extremely good at giving just enough guidance, but also letting you figure things out for yourself, so he definitely put me in at the deep end, but in a really beneficial way that allowed me to develop my initiative.
I was really busy, but it was great because I was given varied tasks to do, as well as having set regular tasks I would do on a weekly basis. There was always work available and if I completed work early, there was always an opportunity to get involved with something else. I loved being busy though, and definitely wouldn't have wanted it any other way!
I think I was given a good amount of responsibility, I was able to take ownership of projects I was working on and then present them to the whole digital team. It was great that I was able to own this work, and really made me feel valued in the team - and like my work was important.
The skills and training received have been invaluable. I have learnt so much, and grown massively in my confidence of the work that I can do. The general experience of working in an office environment, setting up and running meetings was all new to me too, so even that has been helpful. Even more than that, the working in a digital team when I had no digital background has given me so many skills and a huge amount of knowledge that I will definitely be using in the future, from how innovative digital ideas are formed to using the CMS.
The Company
The atmosphere was really good, there was always stuff going on and things to do, also plenty of cakes/treats being brought in for everyone! Everyone is nice and sociable and there is always time for a quick chat before getting back to work.
The internship was well organised, I knew what was expected of me and we were provided with lots of personal development opportunities, from CV workshops to working on presentation skills. There was also an induction day within the 1st week which was really great and helped me to get to know some of the huge group of interns.
I received a lot of personal development training, both from my mentor and through workshops run by CRUK. I was able to attend CV and LinkedIn workshops, and a presentation/ public speaking workshop too. I felt that these exceeded my expectations, and made it really feel like the organisation wanted to invest time into us!

Unfortunately, there is unlikely to be a role opening up that I would be able to take within my team. However, I know that if something comes up I will be applying straight away so hopefully I will be back soon! My team have been so helpful though with helping me look for other jobs by looking over my CV and application forms.
The Culture
Yes! It was great, we had a weekly 'Thirsty Thursday' which was an intern event in local places each Thursday. These were great to get to know each other and relax at the end of the week! I also attended any digital drinks/ nights out, and it was great to go along and get to know everyone better outside of work - especially as the digital team is so big!
It's London, so obviously there are places that are expensive. However, we found bars and pubs that had offers on or where we could get discounts which was great, so not too bad!
There are absolutely loads of places around - there's always something to do!
Yes, we were always told of volunteering or fundraising activities we could get involved with, or to take part in sports classes etc. Then obviously the team activities of going out for drinks etc too.
