    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This was my 4th Internship with Rolls-Royce and once again it was a very good placement. You get a look into how the team you are placed in works within the company and the engineering technologies used within the company. You also see the complexities that come with working in such a large company.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I worked in were great. If you make the effort to get stuck in you get projects that can really help the team and, if done to a good standard, the team really notice what you have done and appreciate it. I felt part of the team and a valued member. You get out what you put in.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very busy but if I needed anything was very good at putting aside time to go over it. Due to time constraints my line manager delegated one of the team members as being someone I had weekly meetings with to go over progress and any issues. This was a very good idea as managers are often out of the office at meetings.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • even if my main on-going tasks were not requiring much work one day, getting involved in other projects and just seeing the work the team does means it is very easy to fill your day. Some days (especially leading up to deadlines) I was non-stop all day. Other days I got to see what projects other team members were working on when I had a break in my own work

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given plenty of responsibility during my placement. Although it may have seemed a little bit daunting at the start, once I got started and broke tasks down it made it easier to see the finish line for the projects. It is great experience being thrown into a project and figuring out how to tackle it and get the best result, especially when it involves input from others as you have to consider their time restraints as well.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship will be useful for my degree and for job applications after university. From seeing how an engineering company operates to seeing latest engineering technologies being used, all will benefit my career. The skills I developed will further me as an engineer and increase my employability.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great. Productive but also up for a laugh. Such a friendly team which is so helpful when doing a placement as you settle quicker, feel part of the team and ultimately enjoy it more. Good mood in the office also helps team productivity and it is something my placement highlighted.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. I knew my line manager and location plenty of time in advance and they were able to get my laptop and drive access sorted before I arrived. I would recommend contacting your line manger at least once before you start. Letting them find out bit more about you and you being able to ask questions about the team and the work you will be doing is great and enables appropriate background reading to be done. Due to an IT issue with my account there were a few complications but it couldn't be avoided and was worked round as best possible.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was able to go on training and meet employees in the area that my final year project is on to get a bit of an insight before going back to university. I asked to be in civil aerospace this summer but you do not get a say whereabout within that engineering sector you will work. This is good and bad. It means you may explore teams you didn't know existed and end up finding the job you want or you may be put in a placement you have little interest in. For me, all my internships have worked well.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing.. I have applied for the Graduate Scheme after completing my final year at University so hope to gain a place through this. Having so many engineering roles across different sectors (aero, marine, nuclear propulsion for subs etc) it is a very attractive company to work for.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were no other placement students in my team or in the office and I was not staying in the derby uni accommodation as a commuted in from my student house in Nottingham. This did mean I missed out on the social side of halls but I avoided paying double rent and instead I socialised with my uni friends. I got on very well with my colleagues and if I had been around in the next few months had been invited out with them which would have been fun.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being located in the east midlands area meant cost of living was alright. As previously mentioned I stayed in my student house in Nottingham so avoided paying double rent. Downside to that is having to pay fuel costs for commuting in. There is the possibility of getting the train and the Rolls-Royce shuttle bus but a car is more convenient especially with a back injury.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Wouldn't know. I didn't go out in Derby so wouldn't know but have heard from the team there are some good pubs around. As I lived in Nottingham that's where I socialised. Other commitments meant that I didn't have my evenings free so this summer has been a very busy one and so experiencing the nightlife of the area wasn't a priority of mine.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • You can join the Intern and Graduate association which organise activities but as I was busy throughout the summer I didn't join this. I didn't join this year but the Rolls-Royce leisure centre is very good. They are plenty of activities you can get involved with, I just didn't have time this summer.
