    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The organisation is fantastic. I enjoyed the friendliness and positive attitudes of the employees. The actual work was something that I personally wasn't massively interested in so I found certain tasks a little dull. This is a personal thing though and if I return it's likely that I'll return to a different team and this problem will be avoided.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like a lot of the work they could've done without me but I do feel that I made their workload less, even if it was only reduced by a tiny amount. I had my own project, and I believe my team valued not having to deal with this project themselves.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • If I needed help, support or guidance, they were always there. Most of the time I'd try to figure things out for myself but whenever I got stuck, id run over to a team members desk and my queries would be answered if not immediately, then later when they were free to speak.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of my teams work and the length of my internship I couldn't participate in a lot of projects my team were working on. This was due to the timings and the fact that some projects went on for months. However I did small tasks every so often.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had my own project so this was a large amount of responsibility. I also had small tasks that I'd do independently. I often had to report things in meetings where others relied on my updates. Overall, I was given a decent amount of responsibility even though my workload wasn't massive.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The communication, organisational skills will be used again most definitely. Not really during my degree but certainly after in the working world and possibly for my own personal accomplishments. I feel like working within a team had a great impact on me and improved my collaborative skills further. Overall, although I may not notice, I'd say I will use skills developed later on in life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • 4 out of 5 days I was based in London and I loved the atmosphere. I didn't have a proper desk and was stationed on "hot desks" where there was always a less serious vibe. I sat near other interns so that probably skewed my opinion on the atmosphere because we got to know each other quite well and often had fun together outside of the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • there were three webinarsfor all interns, weekly one to ones with managers and introduction/off boarding events with lunch and talks. Overall, it was pretty well structured and we were updated by email from the human resource department as to what we needed to do next with regards to our internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given a laptop and had sit downs with colleagues who ran me through their tasks and taught me simple things. There wasn't any formal training but I didn't expect any as it was only an internship and I was only there for ten weeks. There were webinars specifically designed for interns to help us understand some of Santander's main motivations.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It's looking like I'll be invited on to the graduate scheme, however I'm not sure if I'll accept. This question refers to the whole organisation though so I'd say I'm looking into coming back but within a different department. The actual prospects are good but the graduate offer would be for the department I did my internship in so it's likely I'll decline.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Among the other interns, the social life was second to none. I have to take responsibility for some of the nights out though. Coming from the university lifestyle it was only right for me to suggest things for others. There was a close group of interns I was part of and we really had fun (especially on Friday nights). Didn't really go out with colleagues though as my team were much older than me.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I already lived in London so I was used to it but for some it was a surprise. The actually area I worked in (Euston/regents) was quite expensive but it came at no surprise to me. London Interns get paid slightly more though to accommodate for this. I lived where I lived all year(student flat) so living was just continuous. Had an annoying 35 minute commute though.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good bars, pubs and most importantly clubs. It was close to Camden. You can walk, bus or tube to Camden in 10 minutes and that's where we spent most of our nights out. The pub right outside the London office(the refinery) was great for a pint after work (or a taste of what's to come in Camden). At the end of the day, It's London. If you know what you're doing, night life is unrivalled.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had a corporate service responsibility task where we had to raise money for partnered charities. This was part of the internship and got us involved in different things. We did the classic bake sale to the public, along with an internal donut sale. Other than that there weren't many opportunities but I know if you are a full time employee there are many especially charity ones.
