The Role
The job was different from what I wanted to do so I was disappointed at first, and the project I was given was hugely interesting although I wasn't expecting to be able to do great work as a new starter. I liked the company work ethic and the way my colleagues co-operated.
I was given a strong indication at the beginning that my work would be very useful and my recommendations would be directly implemented in the department. However, people didn't take much interest in me or my project, and I often felt like I was being slightly underestimated.
I was very grateful to my immediate manager for the help and guidance he gave me throughout. It suits my style of working to be in very regular contact in order to test my understanding and my work. It went downhill when he was on paternity leave as other's didn't have the time/inclination to get as involved as he was.
My supervisor was careful not to put pressure on me, so I was on in a hurry, but I did have work to be getting on with and I attended team/functional meetings.
Sole responsibility for my project, but I was given very achievable goals and my work was under scrunity from my supervisor so I did not have responsibility out of my comfort zone.
Technically, the project was very comfortably within my ability and I won't take anything back to university with respect to that. I have developed skills mainly in presenting information in a clear and professional way, which I will be able to take with me to further study and employment.
The Company
The odd fun character but generally quiet and professional
Very clear, achievable targets set out by my supervisor and his manager. No fault with the organisation of the project.
Really impressed with the amount of investment in us. I had ambassador training, and I was sent on the offshore training course for a week, provided with protective equipment and allowed to go offshore to visit the platform I had been working on. Also a number of activities were paid for us to do socially as team building. I would have liked slightly more technical training but I was only there for 11 weeks so they can't do too much training or we wouldn't get any work done.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Would look very seriously at a job offer if I were to be invited back
The Culture
Interns all lived together in student halls so it was very easy to get people together. There was some mixing with graduate employees too.
Aberdeen is quite expensive.
A fair amount of choice for places to go, it's not like a village, but nights out were not great!
Endless charitable opportunities linked to work! Also gyms and stuff nearby so it was never boring.
