The Role
The ten week internship with Santander offered a good insight into banking from an operations and management perspective. Although the specific type of work that I was given was not exactly what I was looking for, you are given the liberty to explore other areas of the bank that you might be more interested in, and they will happily facilitate this too.
I was very impressed with how other members from the team valued me equally as any other team-member, rather than treating me as an intern that would only spend ten weeks in the office. This meant that my contributions would be taken seriously, despite just joining the team and lacking past experience.
The amount of work was not as balanced as I thought it would be. There were several occasions in which I barely had any work to do, and in other occasions I would actually be considerably busy. Fortunately, I was assigned an independent research project which I could work on during periods time where I was not very busy.
The skills that I have developed during my internship are strongly based on management, governance and presentation. I believe that these will not assist in a huge amount during my degree, since it is a more technical degree (computer science). However, I've had the chance to work on a couple of projects with different people, which should has certainly been useful for improving my ability to work in a team.
