The Role
I have really enjoyed this internship with Lloyds. I have been located in the Leeds Mid Markets team, whilst also spending time with financial markets and client management. The work that I've been tasked with has been both interesting, and stimulating. Crucially, this placement has armed me with a wide range of skills that I believe will prove invaluable during my future career.
My colleagues have been a fantastic help to me throughout the duration of this 10 week internship. Initially, due to my degree being almost completely unrelated to finance, I struggled with the jargon used in the office. Whenever I had any questions about this, I was always given detailed information. This meant I was able to provide far more value to the team.
My Line manager has been fantastic. We have set up weekly meetings, which have been crucial to my personal development. He has been supportive, and helped co-ordinate a trip down to the Lloyds Banking Group learning centre, in Solihul. This was where I undertook a free accounting course, which was not only interesting, but also very good for my CV.
I believe that this internship gave me the perfect balance of being busy, whilst also not being over-worked. I had plenty of ongoing tasks that needed attention throughout my placement, but I was also given enough desk time to work through other things. This meant I could spend time on discover learning, located on the Lloyds interchange. This helped me develop my soft skills.
I had the responsibility of organising a netoworking event in conjunction with BDO and Squire Patton Boggs. This involved sending out invites and organising the bookings for the event. Moreover, I undertook a file record management programme across Yorkshire and the Humber. This is very important according to FCA legislation. Overall, therefore, the tasks that I completed during this internship meant I had to manage a lot of responsibility.
I believe that this internship will definitely help me tackle my second year at university. My time management skills have been improved as I have had to balance my own calendar, ensuring that I deliver results on all the tasks that I have been given. Moreover, I have learnt how to use microsoft excel in lots of new ways. I believe this will help me organise my documents and files and university, and will result in better grades.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office has been very good throughout the time I've been here. There is a good mixture of serious work, but there is also a great team spirit. Some of the people in the office even crack some funny jokes! People are always offering to make each other hot drinks and generally help each other out wherever possible, which has been really refreshing to see.
I think Lloyds have done a great job of organising my internship. From the start to the finish, I have a tailored schedule which has allowed me to add value to the business, but also to develop skills that will look excellent when I make applications for different roles in the future.
The firm paid for me to go on a training day to the Solihull learning centre. I undertook a course entitled 'understanding accounts' which provided me with a fundamental understanding of accounts. This included work on profit and loss as well as balance sheets. This proves how the firm has taken a keen effort to develop my skills.
The future employment prospects at Lloyds are certainly bright. Due to my role as a Lloyds scholar, I have the opportunity to undertake another internship at the end of my second year. This means that I can be referred to the graduate scheme. There are lots of different streams available, many of which appeal to me.
The Culture
There has been a decent amount of opportunities, but perhaps not quite as many as I would have liked. The charity challenge meant that we met with lots of other interns and worked as a team. It was this teamwork that led to socialising. However, I lived at home during the placement, which likely explains why I felt slightly left out.
I lived at home so my costs were extremely low. However, the bank offered to pay for accomodation for students living outside of their local area. This was an extremely generous offer, and is something I hope to utlisise on my second year placement. I am looking to do an internship in the Risk department in London.
Leeds undoubtedly has one of the most vibrant night life scenes in the north, if not the UK as a whole! There are a wide range of bars and clubs, such as Space and Tiger Tiger. There are also nice restaurants to eat at, such as Jamie's Italian, Bar and Grill and Nandos. This makes for a great experience for everyone.
There were very few opportunities in this regard. It would have been nice to have some sports clubs. This would possibly have added to the earlier question about social life. If there was an office football team or an office cricket team, people would have been able to interact and made friends. This might be something to consider.
