The Role
The best placement one can get. It was a big project which gave me a lot of experience.
My manager was like a close friend to me with whom I could go and chat at anytime.
If I wanted to learn anything new on the project, my manager would provide me support in making my wish come true. For example, once I wanted to join the Site safety commitment meetings with Health and Safety adviser to discuss the safety issues on site and finding out ways to achieve the mission zero. It was very productive for me to learn about safety issues.
I found the site generally quite as it was the pre construction stage and most of the works involved piling and excavations. Some days were busy while at times it was very quiet.
Rather than a specific job role, I was working with section manager, construction manager and project manager.
The skills I learnt at this placement will help me in my modules such as construction tech 3, dissertation and professional practice. Some of the specific skills that will be beneficial to me during my degree are communication skills, technical skills and presentation skills. Other than working in the site, we had a weekly learning session with some of the specific business leaders on varied topics. This learning session was very fruitful to me to understand the construction business.
The Company
The atmosphere was very lively. Everybody was working together. Sometimes, we would go out to play football every Thursday.
It was organised properly. An online portal was created before the placement which gave all interns general idea of what will be happening during the time of the placement.
There was a huge investment in students during the summer placement. The weekly learning sessions were very informative to understand the Laing O' Rourke business.

I believe Laing O' Rourke are among the best employers within the UK. The graduate acceptance rate is quite high compared to other construction companies.
The Culture
Yes, I had two other students doing the placement. At times, we used to go out on Friday, play football on Thursday evenings and attend other Laing O' Rourke events.
The cost was slightly cheaper than my home area. The company paid us well too. :)
Didn't try the night life of Watford. We once went to West London.
There was once a top golf event organised by one of the sub contractors. The drinks and food were free. It was the best night.
