The Role
I really enjoyed the experience on site and found that I learnt a lot on my short period working, both in terms of practical and management skills.
I definitely felt part of the team, so much so that they asked for me to stay on until I went back to university and took me out and paid for my breakfast on the final day!
I spent the first few weeks of my placement shadowing a few of the engineers who taught me and explained any questions I had. It was only until I felt comfortable enough to carry out the tasks by myself that they allowed me to operate alone, and even then if I had any problems all I had to do was ask.
Some days were slightly slower than others with not much to do as not much was happening on site. Other days were extremely busy and absolutely flew by. That's just the way site work is I think, it's not every day there is lots going on.
I was left in charge of a small team of 5 men, and it was my job to make sure that the large settlement tanks were constructed correctly.
While I didn't really learn any theory or skills directly related to my university degree, I learnt a lot of practical skills regarding how a lot of different things are implemented on site. In addition, I feel my soft skills, such as communication and management improved greatly.
The Company
It's a difficult one for me to answer as I was in the office very little, I was out on site every day.
It was organised well, only slight issue was that I didn't have a work laptop for any of the placement which made getting plans and checking the model difficult
They have assigned me a mentor and have given me check sheets of skills which I need to find ways of providing evidence for.
Travel loan
As part of my scholarship I have to work for Laing O'Rourke after graduating
The Culture
Not really no, I didn't spend any time with any other placement/graduate students
Great as I lived with a family member and was close a lot of my university friends
I went home at the weekend so didn't really find out
