The Role
Really enjoyed it. I was rarely given pointless tasks, and was able to assist on a variety of projects within my technology function. In addition to this there were external opportunities bank wide such as Hackathon's and networking drinks. Whenever there wasn't work for me to assist with my line manager was supportive in me going off in shadowing other areas of the bank. I therefore got a very well rounded view of different parts of Tech and the Investment Bank.
My colleagues were all very welcoming and friendly from day one. There was only 1 team social in the 10 weeks, it would of been good to go out more with them, but nevertheless they were very chilled out and very approachable.
My line manager was always willing to sit down and help or explain anything I didn't understand to me. The work he gave me was practical and he was very keen on me shadowing other extras whenever he had little work to give me. I therefore learnt a great deal.
It varied on deadlines of projects and how projects were progressing, but for the most part it was pretty steady. There was only one week where I had to stay late every night to make sure the proposals, reports and projects I was working on got done.
The tasks I was given had an influence on the progress of the projects the team were working on, so they did carry a fair amount of responsibility. The longer the internship went on the more responsibilty I received, which in a way was frustrating because before I knew it I was getting better work to do - and then I was gone. But that's not the team's fault, it's just the nature of the internship being 10 weeks long, there's only so much you can learn and get involved in before it's over.
The leadership, analytical and organisational skills which I developed will definately be of use in my final year of university. The techical knowledge of the areas of tech I'm looking at going into won't be of use at University, but afterwards will be.
The Company
My office was quiet and chilled out, everyone was really nice and friendly and got on really well. It was a good environment to work in. However, RBS are making a lot of cuts and it was a bit of a downer when people on the same floor in a different team lost their jobs due to cost cutting.
Within Tech the future is quite appealing. The people within my area of interest are very forward thinking and that will go a long way. However, there is a lot of red tape in the way of their work
The Culture
Food, rent, and lagers were obviosuly very steap as it's London. This wasn't ideal as RBS don't pay their interns anywhere near as much as other banks do, unless you're in Markets or IBD where you are paid a lot (even though these are the two areas which the bank are downsizing massively, and where their arn't many jobs going).
Pretty good, I was based at Bank, so there were lots of bars and clubs very close by. Quite close to shoreditch for a cheaper more edgy night out, and a few tube stops away from Soho etc. You can go out anywhere from Bank because it's the heart of the City, it's a really ideal area to work in terms of socialising. There's a good spoons right near Leadenhall Market too, the gammon and lager combo is top notch.
There's a Sports and Networking society for grads and interns, but there was nothing organised in London whilst i was there apart from 1 drinks session on the penultimate day ( which I only heard about through word of mouth). I tried to set up a intern rugby team to raise money for charity, however HR wouldn't give me the funding to aid the project. I feel this is an area the Early Careers team should work on.
