The Role
The internship was truly enjoyable. The work is interesting. Being with the Real Estate Finance team gives you insights in both portfolio management and relationship management. The work load is appropriate and I feel a little challenged at times, but there are both heavy days and light days.
To a really large extent. I like to keep relationships professional between colleagues, but I also like to feel welcomed. RBS in Manchester gives exactly this type of work environment. My colleagues were genuinely interested in me, both in and out of work. The work I provide for my colleagues is appreciated.
I received great support. My managers understand my background and my aspirations, and tried to enable me to achieve my goals. My background is in research so the research projects they gave me were within my comfort zone, but they also gave me models and deal analysis assignments so that I expand my knowledge. I was providing input as well as learning at the same time.
The were busy days and light days.
My responsibility was primary research, analysis, and modelling. Those are useful background work that can assist the relationship manager or the portfolio manager.
The most useful thing that I learned was how a working life will be like. The training I received helped me put simple economic knowledge into reality. Banking is more experience based than knowledge based, so the experience did not necessarily assist my in my degree, which is extensively theoretical, but it definitely prepared me for work.
The Company
Really relaxed and friendly. Definitely less politics than some other offices I've seen. At the same time, people do get their work done.
Very organised, smooth communication, well set-up structure.
To a large extent. They would go beyond what is normally required to hire international students, and provide travel benefits so that we can travel to the required locations without difficulties.

The Culture
Good team environment. We go for pints very often.
Rent is acceptable in Manchester. £600 a month for a studio is not uncommon. A pint is £3.5, and a nice dinner would cost less than £20.
