The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at RBS. It was a very rewarding experience. Working within the PMO meant I got exposure to a lot of what happens within the bank and the team I worked in were warm, welcoming and very helpful. The experience has helped me create a career path and plan for the future.
From the get go I was fully utilised and integrated within my team. Any work completed well and to a high standard was praised and anything I did above and beyond what was expected of me was always commended and highlighted. This enabled me to feel less like and intern and more like a regular RBS colleague.
My manager and supervisor helped me throughout the inter programme. Guidance, support and information were continually given to me. Information that not only helped me whilst I was at RBS but that will continue to help me and shape the way I think once I have left. I have learnt a lot from my superiors whilst on the programme.
I was given two projects to work on within the first couple of days at the company. This meant I always had goals and deliverables to fulfil. There was never a time where I was lost for something to do. If there ever was a lull in the work I had to complete, I knew I could always help out other members within my team.
I feel I was given the same level of responsibility as most of the other people within my team, well, a level of responsibility that was required of me. I was never treated like an intern in the respect that I was never treated like I was not adequate enough to complete tasks.
As I do chemistry at uni it was interesting to see the difference between my degree and the finance and business world. I believe most of the skills I have learnt will definitely help me post university and especially when deciding what career I want. My knowledge and skills have most definitely expanded.
The Company
Everyone within my office were very warm and welcoming and friendly. The office always maintained a professional atmosphere but in a way that I felt confident and comfortable the minute I stepped into the building. I always felt comfortable speaking to superiors as everyone was very approachable and happy to help.
From the beginning of the programme and information was relayed very late on. On the first day I was sent to the wrong building. I had no idea how long work days were, when I could go for lunch, who my manager was or what to expect until I started work on the first day. With regards to the presentation, report and graduate onboarding process it was all very unclear. Information had to constantly be asked for, with even my manager being unsure of what was happening as we weren’t told enough.
People within my team always accommodated any needs I had with regards to training or knowledge that I need to acquire. Obviously initially I had to try learn quite a lot quite quickly but I can happily say that now I understand most of what happens and is required within a PMO team.

I will hopefully be accepted o the graduate scheme, which is something I would really really enjoy. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at RBS and would be more than happy to come back once I have finished my degree to progress further through the bank. Knowing that everything I have done during my internship can help me to be accepted on the grad scheme has driven me to aim to excel.
The Culture
Being students, many of the interns were happy to meet up after work, go for food, go for drinks and just generally let of some steam and chat amongst each other. I have made friends whilst on the internship that I really hope I will stay in contact with. Working on the CSR challenge and presentation in different groups also allowed more socialising.
Living in London is very expensive, especially when I will be progressing into my fourth year of uni and therefore are already paying rent for my next house there. I would say the inter scheme is paid fair but in order for me to have enjoyed my time more here I would have required a higher salary.
