The Role
I enjoyed working here. You get a great induction in either London or Edinburgh which consists of some networking, team building activities and some lecture style talks from stakeholders across the business. This gave me a good introduction and also made me feel valued and helped me meet some new colleagues.
I felt incredibly valued by my team. They treated me like a member of the team rather than an intern and allowed me to work on real projects and travel to different offices with them for meetings. I also got praise and recognition regularly by members of my team.
I was supported and guided by my manager immensely. I had weekly 1 to 1 meetings for around an hour which gave me more than enough time to discuss what I had been doing, what I wanted to do more of and get feedback from my manager.
For 3 weeks, I was not busy at all. I asked for more work and to become more involved and my manager accommodated for this. I was also not busy in my final week as I was handing over documents and finishing up.
I was allowed to work on key confidential documents which were shown to stakeholders across the business. I was treated as a real member of the team and given responsibility - sometimes, you may have to ask for additional responsibility.
The skills will not necessarily help with my degree, but in future jobs the experience will be invaluable. Working on a project taught me a lot about project management and stakeholder engagement.
The Company
The atmosphere is quite serious, which was different to other placements I've had. There are no social lunches/dinners but once there was drinks after work.
Very well. It was structured well with events throughout (when you start, mid-way, at the end). These events are fun/light-hearted and give you a chance to see all the interns across the UK. You have regular meetings with your manager and assessments (individual and group) throughout. All well organised and explained well at the induction.
No formal training, more on the job training and shadowing. This didn't bother me.
Subsidised Canteen
Very appealing, I enjoyed the internship - however, only downfall was the atmosphere/culture.
The Culture
Interns in my city met twice in ten weeks for after work drinks. If you're based in London, drinks after work are on a weekly basis.
cheaper than London!!
Nightlife is great (Birmingham) - but don't expect to experience too much of this with your team.
Yes, there was football and volunteering opportunities.
