The Role
The internship was hugely enjoyable. My team made my time at KPMG very enjoyable and I became great friends with a group of fellow interns. The buddy system that KPMG operates is also great as you always have someone you can turn to and ask questions.
My team could not have been better to me. I was in constant contact with my buddy which really helped me settle in and get to know the other team members. KPMG as a whole seems to be a very friendly firm, everyone made the time to not only tell me how to perform a task, but also explain why I was doing everything. I thoroughly enjoyed working with my team and cannot fault them one bit.
My team supported me in everything that I did. They made it clear from the start that if there was anything I was unsure of, they would be happy to make the time and help me out. They even helped me prepare for my final interview, giving me invaluable tips and industry insight.
I was lucky enough to be part of a team during busy season so I was kept very busy throughout. There were a few days where work was limited but this gave me the opportunity to research more about the firm and undertake both mandatory and optional training courses.
It was amazing how much responsibility I was given throughout the internship. It really surprised me that despite my lack of experience (I had never studied accounting before I started) I was given work that really mattered and was able to contribute to the team. I was also working on the client site for 4 of the 6 weeks, during which I was able to engage with the client's finance team.
I learnt a lot about Audit but the internship was also helpful in developing my confidence when performing tasks. It also helped develop my communication skills, whether that be with other interns, colleagues or client interaction.
The Company
The general atmosphere was great, everyone was very friendly and approachable. There was also a great working atmosphere when the audit became very busy which was a good experience for me. The interns also made a group chat which meant aside from the team you work with, you also have fellow interns to have lunch and after work drinks with. KPMG in general was a very friendly firm, everyone was very sociable and chatty and it was genuinely a great working environment.
In general, I was kept busy and throughly enjoyed working with my team. However there was two weeks at the end of the internship where I wasn't given an assignment on the system and despite emailing relevant parties I remained unassigned. Luckily my previous team were happy to have me continue working with them and kept me busy.
Interns had full access to a range of online training that we could voluntarily undertake. I was also fully integrated to my team and felt like they invested a lot of time in explaining the company and job to me thoroughly.

Very appealing & I look forward to joining KPMG when I graduate!
The Culture
We had a great intern group but due to the nature of the job it was quite difficult to plan meet ups. Everyone is split off immediately into their various client teams and some work on the client's site rather than KPMG offices. This was the case for me for the first 4 weeks. However KPMG did try to help the situation by organising an intern bowling event and giving us the opportunity to network during our induction day. The social scene is definitely what you make of it, I know some interns who were on the client's site for the whole internship but there were also some who were at KPMG offices the whole time. Definitely meet as many people as you can on the first induction day and make a group chat early on!
London, so it was very expensive. Even happy hour prices (usually around 5-7pm) in Canary Wharf and the City would set you back a fair bit. KPMG do help contribute towards lunch though (£3.20 per day in the office, £4 per day on client site); from my understanding speaking to friends at other firms, this is quite unique to KPMG. Travel in London is also a huge factor, get a student oyster if you can as travelcards are much cheaper.
Best nightlife in the world, Canary Wharf is buzzing after work as is the City. However it is also very pricey!
There was the intern bowling event which was a nice place to meet fellow interns in all business areas (advisory, tax & audit) but it would've been nice if this was a bit earlier in the internship. My team also had a sign-off lunch at Jamie's Italian which was great fun. My buddy also took me out for lunch and drinks for my last weeks. London is expensive though so I didn't go out for drinks with interns too often.
