    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have worked many work experience placements now, but this placement gave me real responsibility, i made some good friends and I was exposed to the oil and gas industry which enabled me to gain some good skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My collegues organised for me to go offshore and trusted me to meet with suppliers. I knew that my work made a difference to the team and my line manager was very supportive.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager had daily conversations with me, set me clear objectives and checked i was alright. He was suuportive of my work and offered me encouragement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was really busy on a daily basis. My line manager always ensured i had something to do so that i did not sit there bored, it helped me to be motivated. I also attended lots of trips and the copany set us lots of projects with the other interns to keep us entertained.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of reponsibility, i was trusted to meet with suppliers and make the end decisions on components and systems and put them into service on the platforms.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have gained offshore qualifications, confidence with working with a range of teams and suppliers. I have also gained a lot of technical information on mechanical components and systems such as valves and design processes which will help me with my degree studies and beyond.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everybody got along with each other and was interested in each others work and lifestyle outside of work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I always knew what was expected of me and where i needed to be. I also was given repsonsibility to manage my own time which allowed me to be flexible. HR had organised everything for us to be settled happily beforehand and we had met our line managers over the phone before we had turned up to work which helped to settle nerves.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I gained my offshore qualification and learnt more about the industry by being sent to events such as offshore Europe and trips to suppliers. The company sent me offshore and gave me many perks such as flexi friday which meant that i learnt lots of new skills and had time to relax.

  • I have been put through to their assessment centre and hope to get a job with them in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I lived with all the other interns and we went out and did lots of activities together. The company puts on lots of social events such as team meals, dinner dances, music events and conferences.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Aberdeen so it was very expensive to live in but i earnt enough to cover my costs.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Aberdeen has a good nightlife, lots of clubs and bars and open till quite late.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes BP puts on many events and sponsors many events so events such as football, music and meals we always avaliable. BP also gave us flexi friday so every other weekend we got to go on long weekends and we went to Edinburgh Fringe and Inverness and other places for long weekends.
