The Role
I have enjoyed my placement, my team have made it an enjoyable workplace as well as the other Industrial Placment Students who we socialise with and meet up regularly and are a great network of friends to have on placment. The work was challenging and engaging an as my intrest grew in my project I enjoyed it more. However due to the contracters on my project being diffcult this resulted in my project and workload been limted. But overall an enjoyable experinece and its ammasing how far you can develop in this year.
Always going to be diffcult as you are starting a new career in a new field. However the members of National Grid have always been very friendly and my team were very welcoming and supportive. Once your knowledge of the field increases your input and outlook can be valued.
Regular Monthly one to oneswith your line manager which were very effective in order to plan the next stage in your projects. Due to the nature of the job your line manager and yourslef may be out on the patch so you may go for times without seeing them for a while but they are only a phone call away. The new talent team were very supportive and you will be allocated quaterly reviews to aid you development
I was allocated a placement in the Projects team the workload can fluctuate depending on were abouts your project is and how competent your contracters and stakeholders are. There was always the opportunity to see the work going on in pipelines and projects teams
I was given free reign of my own project which I was allowed to run contacting contracters and stakeholders with support from my line manager
My workbased communication improved greatly in paticular with Phone calls and E-mails. As well as different aspects of project management and organising which I wasnt previously aware of these skills are very transferable to any job role/further studying. However I wish the work could be a bit more technical I was working with designs and calculations but these were contracted out and not completed by myself. FYI Its worth noting National Grid invest a lot of time in your personal development and what work aspects you wish to improve upon
The Company
Very friendly and would offer help even when they are under a heavy workload
National Grid invest heavily in your training with various exercise and development days before you start work and after your placement to access how and where you have developed. Quaterley reviews can help you find out feedback and which areas you need to improve in to better yourself in the workplace. One of National Grids best qualities
Flexi Time
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
National Grid's Graduate programme looks very appealing the placement. Students and graduate events are often arranged with National Grid were you are able to discuss and talk about each others experience. From what I have heard the devolpment and investment in the graduate scheme is great allowing the chance to develop yourself further.
The Culture
The fellow Industrial placment students were very sociable with an original three days spent togther at the training centre. There were various National Grid orgenised events to network and meet up. If an area in National Grid or other engineering areas are appelaing to yourself It is promoted to arrange the event and other Ip's are welcome to join. As well as the group organising nights out which were more relaxed.
Lived In Birmingham 15 minutes away from home I would suggest sparerooms to anyone looking for houses to rent. I personally chose some of the biggest houses availabel in order to make friends in the area this paid off as I got on and socialised with most of my housemates.
Birminghams pretty good for a night out and been sucha good city theres a range of bars and other activites during the day to suite your needs
Lots of trips with the Placment students Dinorwig Hydro electric plant was a very good experinece
