The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed working for BP as a Petroleum engineer
My colleagues were great I was never once treated like an intern. I was treated more like a new graduate, new to the company with a potential long stint rather than someone who is only there for a few weeks.
When ever I needed assistance my supervisor was there.
I was very busy doing work and managing extra aspects of the internship like the newsletter or attending lunch and learns and organising the Marie Curie charity event. So there was a good balance that allowed me to gain different competencies.
I wasn't running the show by any means but the work I was undertaking had never been done before and was something my supervisor was keen to learn the results of so from that respect I was given a lot of responsibility.
Everything I have learned during my internship is new to me. My course is Chemical and Petroleum engineering but I was doing a Petroleum engineers job, which I knew nothing about before I started. I have gained a lot of knowledge working here which I will carry on with me. It has opened my eyes to the upstream oil and gas world.
The Company
I work in Annexe D of the Aberdeen office so I am separated from the main office so there isn't a buzz like the main building but it is a nice, relaxing, quiet environment. The office is a lot smaller than the main building. Everyone is very friendly as well in both offices.
Everything was very well organised. My laptop was ready for me when I arrived and we immediately set my goals for the duration of my project.
I haven't received personal training and development because of the team in which I work in, saying that my knowledge of the industry has grown a substantial amount since being here. Other interns did undertake offshore survival training as their role required it.

Very. The fact that participating in the internship and being sicessful during the internships allows you early access to the assessment centre is great. I have been put forward for the assessment centre which is next week.
The Culture
As Aberdeen intern we generally all lived together unless we were homebased so there were always people about to do things with which is nice if you are new to the area!
Aberdeen isn't cheap, especially for a night out (although cinema is very cheap!) but it certainly didn't hinder our social life! Most weekends we were out.
Aberdeen has SO many clubs and bars you won't get bored but it also has the bowling alley, cinema, crazy golf and lots of restaurants.
Yes. I joined the touch rugby team and every summer the challengers organise a charity event. This year was a Marie Curie fashion event, which I helped organise, which we all joined in on. We also went to highland games, hill walking, lots of things!
