The Role
Enjoyed every day of working at the company. Was fortunate to be a part of a great project with increasing responsibility as the year went on. Work was also challenging and pushed me outside of my natural comfort zone.
Very much so, a strength of the company is that many of us Placement Students were treated as normal employees. Many people I worked with did not initially realise I was a student.
Given huge support, both in terms of admin tasks and also project work. I was never left to do things that I could not do, however I was also pushed outside my comfort zone to ensure I was continually improving and developing.
You are treated like an employee and therefore given plenty of responsibility. Managing a workstream as part of a large scale project was fantastic, it meant that I was continuously busy whilst doing something different each day.
Massive responsibility. A piece of work I did has now been implemented to an entire department that deal with customers on a national scale. Despite being given such a large responsibility for a student, I never felt like I was out of my depth due to the support and quality management I received over the year.
I developed skills I was weak at, and, importantly, I discovered and developed areas that I am strong at. This is hugely significant, as, being a business student, I now have a much greater understanding of my capabilities in the work place, where I can get to, and also the potential career paths I can take. I cannot recommend it enough for personal development, the company places huge emphasis on this and it is reflected in everything that you do.
The Company
My office was naturally quiet at times, however the people were fantastic remaining friendly, approachable, inclusive and supportive from the moment I joined the team. the wider atmosphere in my base location (Hinckley) was brilliant and you'll find yourself knowing an awful lot of people within the first few weeks.
Absolutely brilliantly, the placement coordinators are constantly keeping in touch and organising development opportunities and social gatherings. From work perspective, it was also brilliantly organised and I cannot recommend the programme enough.
National Grid exceeded all of my expectations in this area, they have a great reputation for developing people for a reason. You have tailored development plans, as well as regular catch ups with managers to identify potential opportunities to develop. Not only this but my manager was constantly utilizing my strengths and pushing me on my weaknesses. If you want a placement that develops you into a well rounded individual, then National Grid is certainly a good place to apply for.

In the short term, I have been lucky to have been offered a place on the graduate scheme. In the longer term, opportunities are fantastic, it is incredible to see the amount of young people and former University Graduates that are now in senior leadership roles. The CEO was on the grad scheme in the past and is a great example of what can be achieved by young people in the company.
The Culture
I have made some great friends on the scheme, both fellow students and colleagues. As National Grid is such a large company, you don't always see each other regularly. However, this did not stop us from having some great social occasions.
Most of the locations are in areas that aren't too expensive, I lived at home and so this was not a problem for me.
As I worked in Hinckley, the nightlife was not brilliant. There are however places you can go nearby etc. Weekends were fun and meeting other students / colleagues for social gatherings was always enjoyable.
A huge amount of opportunities to get involved in.
