About You
I really enjoyed multiple aspects of the programme. Firstly, the few days spent at the Tax Business School in Canary Wharf were fantastic, as they gave a really good insight into what was involved in the professional exams, while we got to meet a range of interns from offices all over the UK- great for networking. It also helped with the duration of my internship as I had a base knowledge to work from. Secondly, at all levels employees were incredibly friendly and took time to explain things and answer questions. Finally I was given responsibility and interesting projects to work on.
I felt valued the whole way through the programme. This was evident in the time every member of my team, right up to partner level, took out of their day to explain things they were working on and answer my questions. They were genuinely interested in my opinion and treated me like a fellow colleague.
I received ample guidance and support. Having the initial training was very useful and made subsequent explanations in relation to work, much more simple. Staff went through work clearly and in detail. From the first day everyone was very approachable, so it was easy to ask for further clarification if needed.
The skills and information I received will definitely assist me after my degree is finished. Receiving first hand experience in a career I am interested in has been a great way of testing whether I enjoy that career, allowing me confidently focus my job search after university. I developed skills such as communication, networking and taking on responsibility, vital for my degree and later in life. I also learnt tips for how best to progress my career.
The Company
The insight was very well structured. The initial induction day and then the two days in London, were a brilliant way to meet a huge range of other interns from different UK offices and in different service lines- an aspect that sets it apart from other internships. Both were very well organised. The duration of the internship was also very well structured, and included a social planned for the interns at my office.
The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. Staff were fun and interesting to talk to and while everyone worked hard, it was not a stressful environment. Employees did not expect me to have a detailed knowledge of tax beforehand and I did not feel under pressure at any point during the internship. I looked forward to coming into work.
They invested in us a great deal. We had an all expense paid two days of training in Canary Wharf at the beginning of the internship, by those who would train their Graduates for the accounting exams. Then throughout my internship I was learning new things everyday. When employees were talking through new issues it was mostly one-to-one, so I could easily go through it at my pace and the personal training and development was very focused.
The insight was really useful in helping me understand the culture, as you get to experience it first hand. Everyone was incredibly friendly and inclusive from the first day and this continued throughout the internship. Each person's contribution is valued and they are a very employee orientated firm. While it was relaxed, every employee was still very professional, focused on creating high quality work.
It was generally very valuable. The projects I was working on were substantial and similar to what a graduate would be doing, giving me a direct insight into that career. I was however only in one department within Tax for the internship and it would have been great to gain a similar insight in another department, to give me an even more detailed overview. Overall though as I undertook a variety of projects within my department and spoke to employees about other departments, the content of the day was still very valuable in helping me to decide my future career path.
Everything Else
Yes.
There were lots of opportunities throughout the internship. Most of the first day was spent networking with other interns, with a formal session at the end of the day. While we were in London there was also another event in the Canary Wharf office with graduates and employees. Bowling was also organised for the interns in my office. Throughout the internship I met lots of employees in the company, not just in my department, and we went for drinks after work as a team a couple of times.
There was a wide range of societies and clubs and it is very easy to start new ones.
Definitely.
