The Role
I enjoyed my 6 weeks during this job as it gave me a great insight into working in an accounting practice and I enjoyed all the work that I completed. However I decided audit wasn't for me due to the travel and hours.
I feel like my colleagues valued and trusted me highly.
The support and guidance at Grant Thornton is to a really good standard judging by all the other interns/placement students that were here. However, unfortunately as my intake was a little later than most I was unable to meet my people manager due to holidays/busy jobs. Although, my people manager made sure she kept in constant contact via phone call and email to support me so I never felt lost.
In audit there is always something to do. Therefore, I was very busy on a daily basis especially during fieldwork. It is somewhat more relaxing in the office unless there is a deadline approaching.
I was given a lot of responsibility from completing testing, talk to clients to obtain information and signing of accounts
During an internship the training you receive probably will not help towards a finance based degree. However, the practical experience and working within an accounting environment on accounts daily will really help me towards my degree this year.
The Company
I was on fieldwork often so was only in the office for a few days. The atmosphere seemed relaxed during this time and everybody appeared to be very engaging rather than the stereotypical accounting robots
Every other internship seemed to be really well organised with no problems. For my first two weeks my calendar (retain) was completely blocked so I could not be booked onto any jobs. I was able to find work to keep me busy and this was resolved quickly by management. I believe this was because I was a late starter but it did make my first two weeks much harder than others had.
The firm invests highly in its staff for personal training and interns even have a chance to go to Brandenham hall for training
It is very appealing however I have personally decided not to pursue audit so would be looking into another department
The Culture
Yes, everyone is friendly and everyone gets invited everywhere!
As it is based in the city centre the prices are above average as can be expected. However, travel routes are fantastic and travelling in daily is not an issue to save money.
Liverpool has amazing nightlife
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved outside of work for example drink nights and football tournaments
