Intern NSC Human Resources Management Review

I really enjoyed my internship, because I had some task, which I was responsible for. My department supported me wherever they could and it was a very warm welcome from theirside. I felt worth for their department and their tasks and they said that it will be hard to work further on without me, because I did so many different things and I was a big benefit for them and their department.

It was a warm welcome from the very beginning and they included me very well and I think that's not easy, because I'm the only man in a department which consists completly of women. I was involved in activities outside the business for example after dinner or something like that. They said that they will miss me, when I leave the company and that it's important to stay in contact via facebook or linkedin.

The whole team supported me wherever they could. I had many tasks where I need nearly everybody and as you can image it is not easy to get everybody easily, because obvisiouly they are very busy in their daily business. But everybody said, well it's important that you can do your task and so we will support you. I could always ask my supervisor if I need anything yo do my work even if she were very very busy.

It was fine. I had my tasks and enough to do, but the most of the time it was possible to stop working at a extent time and don't work too long. Of course, sometimes it's more stress than another day. But in comparison to my colleagues it would be a shame to talk from stress. So it was all fine.

I had a lot of reponsibility and I had some task which I was responsible for, restructure the drive from the department, ralaunch a sports and social community on site, update the infonet regarding information. And this is the reason why I really enjoyed my internship, because it felt worth to be here and not as somebody of a second class or somebody who cannot take responsible for tasks.

So for me as German I has improved my English for miles, because obvisouly it was necessary that I have to discuss different things with different people in the business and so it was necessary to speak English. As well I did some journeys through the UK to know the people and country and in general to gain experience abroad. But to be honest and that was clear from the very beginning I'm studying in the engineering area and not in the business administration area, so it didn't assist me in my degree studies but as I said I didn't expect it.

The atmosphere in my office was very open and polite. I was looking forward to go to work from day to day, because everybody was open and answered questions if you had something or supprted you if you needed him or her. The What Moves You culture is a great culture and with the values simplicity, authenticity and empowerment the general athmosphere in the office is much better and easier to create a well atmosphere.

It was good organised with some points which could be improved. It took a long time to get the contract and when I got the contract I had to fill several forms, which is not a problem but as a German it's often not easy to know what they exactly want especially if you get an abbreviation. It would be good to explain it more and especially what you really need bak and what can be left blank. At my first day I got my laptop, mouse, keyboard and so on. That was all fine and I also got an overview Powerpoint from my supervisior which makes my start easier.

I visited several Plants like Oxford, Hams Hall, Swindon, Goodwood and Park Lane. This was to support to gain experience abroad and to meet different people across the company. Another topic was to improve my English and this was obvisouly an easy one, because I had to speak English otherwise I had no chance to do my tasks or to live here in the UK. Another topic was to learn how to work with MS Project and I got some time do to this. So they gave me the time which I needed to these activities.

They are very appealing for me. BMW is such an innovative company with innovative products and solutions. I'm as an engineer want to stay at BMW and develope the newest innovations. I also think it was a good decision to introduce BMW i, so we are further with the electrial cars as Mercedes or Audi. I hope I can start after my Master Thesis at BMW in Munich in a development department for advanced driver assistant systems. This is my masters degree and I think that's the future which we need to introduce autonomous driving cars.

I think this could be improved. The problem is, that the most of the people don't live next to each other, so it's not easy to say "OK colleagues let's go for after drink or after dinner, because everybody needs a long time to drive home, and driving home by car means, that you cannot drink some alcohol. And you also don't know who is a student and who lives next to you and are they also new in the area or are they even were born here.

I had to pay 500£ for a room in a house which I shared with 3 other housemates. In conclusion I had round about 700£ to live and this worked very well. I haven't had any money trouble. The only problem was that I got my first salary in my second month and not in my first month so this was a challenge for me and my parents supported me otherwise I had no money for round about 3 weeks.

There was not really a Nightlife in Farnborough. From time to time I was in a pub with another intern in who was also living in Farnborough or we were in a cinema but that's it. But again you don't know who else lives next to you as well as if he or she is interested in using the offers of the Nightlife. It was quite, but you cannot compare Farnborough with a big city like London or another city in Germany like Munich.

In Farnborough we have our sports and social community with several clubs like running club, insanity classes, circuit training, cycling club, motorcycle club, zumba classes, rock choir, yoga club. This activities are all after work. It was a great opportunity to do some sport and to get fit and at the same time to get in contact with other colleagues around the business.
