The Role
It gave me a great insight into what is like to work in Audit. I was able to work as a first year graduate and attended meeting with clients, work on different cases with different teams every week. Also, I got to know most of the department, and everyone was really friendly and supportive.
Even thought, I did not have any Accounting background, I felt like everyone was trying to engage in as many projects as possible.
The only issue I had was that for the first weeks up until my interview I did not have a Performance Manager, and the recruitment team was constantly encouraging us to contact him. The issue was resolved by the end of my internship. Otherwise, I felt great talking to the People's Leader. Also, on each team I was constantly supervised by a graduate who was happy to answer all my questions. They were the ones that gave me feedback at the end of each project.
In general there was usually something to keep me busy constantly. There were some days that there was not much to do as the client was taking his time sending us information. In such days I was doing some administration jobs or completing some of the training available.
On most of the project, I was given great responsibility. I was directly in contact with clients and performing the required control tests. There was always someone to ask in case I had problems, though. Also, clear instructions were given prior to starting each task, so I do not feel overwhelmed. On a daily basis I may had to contact the CFO of a company or reach out for further information from some of the accountants.
As I don't have any Accounting background, audit was a great insight into that. The technical skills are not really applicable to my degree, but definitely I improved my soft skills. Not only, that I participated in a final partner interview which was a great training in case I have to apply for other jobs, but also I had to constantly inform my supervisor how far I am with each task. Also, I learnt more on how to approach a client and how to insist on getting what I need politely.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly, it felt like they were all friends. There was so many social activities that they were constantly discussing.
I felt like the program was organised well. Moreover I managed to gain insight into some other service lines of KPMG. The only downside, was that I had my interview in week 3 and then I was told by the recruitment team that it was matter of days to hear back the outcome. However, it took more than 3 weeks in my case. I think they were changing the application process for graduate schemes, but I felt like we were not clearly informed.
Great opportunities for development! KPMG invests hugely in employee's development such as in qualifications. Also, there are many opportunities for secondments abroad or to a different service line. Also, KPMG trains you valuable soft skills that could be applied to any other job.
The Culture
There was a corporate responsibility event organised for all the summer interns. Also, there were a few socials such as drinks, and dinners organised by managers.
