The Role
I very much enjoyed the internship. I was immediately given real responsibility working directly on client engagements. While overwhelming at first, the hands on approach is definitely a fantastic way to learn.
I felt valued by immediate colleagues. Colleagues were friendly and genuinely seemed appreciative of our help and were keen to provide help and career advice.
Support and guidance from management was very helpful. Supervisors were always available for questions and advice and were happy to give clarifications. Formal feedback was collated by performance manager and then fed back to us.
The workload was very variable. In my first few weeks I was out on client site working on an audit. These weeks were very busy without any downtime. In my final few weeks the day was quieter including some intervals of very little work for us.
The weeks on client site felt as if I had a lot of responsibility. At the beginning of the audit I was assigned a work flow and it was left to me to manage my time and complete my portion of the audit including lots of direct contact with the client.
The skills and training that I developed during the internship will be very useful in both my degree and future career. The time management, organisation and communication skills necessary during the internship are applicable in any field of work or study. The audit specific skills learned although more specific, will be very useful should I pursue a career in accounting.
The Company
The office was very friendly, although people are busy and therefore very focused on their own work. This being said, everyone was more than willing to help/give advice if I asked. The office felt fairly serious without much talking and socializing. I was surprised by the lack of a communal sitting area for lunch breaks- everyone just brought their food back to their desk to eat on their own.
There seemed to be gaps in communication between the student recruitment teams and the managers in the actual office we were assigned to. Interviews, performance managers and feedback while described by the recruitment team seemed to be 'new news' to staff in the individual offices. This was especially evident in the final weeks when there was much miscommunication about our interview results and work assignments.
The firm definitely invests a lot in their employees. Between online training, the induction day and other development activities, it definitely felt that they were investing in us as potential long term employees, not just summer interns.

I have been offered a graduate position with KPMG and will be accepting this offer to begin in September.
The Culture
I was surprised by the lack of interaction we had with the other inters. After the induction day I saw very little of the other audit interns as we were all on different clients/locations. The interns were very friendly, we just didn't have much opportunity for interaction.
Cost of living was fairly typical.
