The Role
My internship was pretty successful - I felt I had proper work to do and contributed to the teams I worked in and I found out much more about audit, KPMG and grad roles
The people I worked with were great - always very friendly, helpful and treated you like an adult. It was good to work with friendly, switched on people of a similar age
On the actual audit jobs this varied depending on the manager - these are busy, stressed people who I found normally delegate work to the audit assistants who would go through step by step what you need to do I had a Buddy, a School Leaver about my age who I worked with for a bit who was very helpful. I was supposed to have been assigned a Performance Manager who was more senior but I was never told about this and I didn't speak to this person So this was a bit more mixed
I normally felt a good balance of busy-ness. I was working by 8.30 in the morning and almost always finished by 5.30 At the start of the internship work was a bit less busy but this was due to my inexperience and the general lack of work on that specific audit job
Probably a bit too much At times I felt I didn't know what I was doing and on my final job we didn't have enough staff so I was given work that should probably be done by someone more senior
Good to have experience in a professional firm and to deal with clients, something I hadn't done before
The Company
Young and friendly people who were enjoyable to work with Audit work involves going to client sites rather being in the KPMG offices. We got lunch together almost every day and people were always happy to help
Relatively well My laptop didn't work on the first day and it communication wasn't great about what I should do with the laptop at the end Also some staff thought I was an A-Level student on work experience
Not enough - a one day induction more to do with KPMG rather than the specifics of audit. This would have helped - eg knowing what materiality is
Subsidised Canteen
Good 85% of interns are offered a job I believe and KPMG seems a good place to start your careers
The Culture
I was in Public Sector Audit and this generally didn't seem to have the social side to it that other larger parts of the business have There was one paid for bowling/meal put on for the interns
Manchester so a Northern town
We had one CSR day where the interns went to a charity that worked with improving the employability of disabled and vulnerable people - this was a really enjoyable and rewarding day
