    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The 8 week internship at HSBC was not only memorable but inspiring. Both my line managers were amazing and taught me a lot. They offered extensive training to me both in and out the office. The fact knowing you got more to learn makes the industry more and more interesting.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From the beginning to the end, my line manager and colleagues always include me in their daily work. No matter how big the responsibility - they are willing to let you try and guide you along the way. The first few weeks were the holding hand period where they were testing how much they can trust you. Afterwards they will let you be responsible for your own projects and take into account your ideas. Not only do I feel valued - I feel respected!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Since the beginning I arrived, my line-manager and team debriefed me on what they were working on and what was expected from me. They had clear guidelines and also took me out for drinks to have informal 1:1 to close the knowledge gap. This was truly helpful for me as I did not come from a finance background. In addition, there were mandatory training modules which you are expected to complete and this gives confidence in what you have to do and learn.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It depended on which placements you were on. Both my placement in London/ York were very packed. The first week of each placements are more relax as it eases you into a new environment. Afterwards - how busy you are depends what you want to get out of this internship. You can be super busy if you want to shadow all different people within the team and more. This is recommended as you can truly see what you are getting into in the future.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • First it is all about trust. When your colleagues and manager see that you are responsible - the importance of the task increases. In addition to your own project you can reach out and ask if other members of the team require assistance. Then will your responsibility increase and also develop skills that will benefit you in the future!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A lot of excel and powerpoint work. This will no doubt benefit across any field of work. The vast services the bank provides allow different skills to attain in different apartments. Knowledgebase - I study science and the content is quite different. However, the mentality and attitude you gain will help you in uni and beyond.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Super friendly. Everyone was really engaging and loads to learn from. Aside from work, people chat and take breaks together. Even then you can gain insight what their daily lives are like. There's constant charity bake offs and of course friday dress down day is a house favourite!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • You can see HSBC does invest into new comers both interns and graduates. Not only are there fancy introduction and training days, there are also charity days which you get to help out and do some good in society. At the beginning there were notebooks and online guides which ensure you to keep on track and keep going. Line-managers are carefully chosen to assist newcomers to assimilate and learn.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As mentioned before, HSBC goes all out and hope to train you to be the best! It provides both formal and informal training which will suit you in and out of office. The individual and group tasks teaches you how to work in different environments and also better the extent of exchange of knowledge.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. You can go to parties and football matches.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London - being in the city it is expected to be pricier than elsewhere in the UK. However the firm does provide TA which can cover some of the expenses. Socials and activities are good fun and jampacked. Living is slightly pricy if you book late. York - being in the North and more suburban - the social life is amazing and less tense than London. You get to experience the countryside and good view whilst working at the same time.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Both London and York has superb nightlife. From pubs to clubs - anything you want can be attained. There's discounts with the company which is always a plus. Though the prices differ due to location. There is always something to do at night no matter chill or wild. It's all up to you and best - at least you get a choice!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were many charity works the bank is involved in and football clubs with the colleagues which you can bond better with them and know them from a perspective that is not inside the office. It is interesting what you can learn from them outside as it's less formal.
