The Role
The internship was a very positive experience overall and it gave me a great insight into tax and advisory at EY. I was given the opportunity to work on multiple engagements with people from all levels within my team (graduate to partner) and it was this variety that made every day different and enjoyable.
I felt welcome within the team from day one and my colleagues were keen to get me involved in client work right from the beginning. I felt valued by everyone I had the chance to work with and received a lot of useful feedback in addition to them being grateful for any work that I had assisted them with.
The support and guidance I received throughout the internship was exceptional and I always had multiple people to contact if I had any queries. I had formal meetings with my supervisor/counsellor at the beginning, middle and end of the internship and more regular informal catch-ups in between. They were committed to supporting me and made sure I was achieving the goals I had set out for myself at the start of the internship.
This varied quite substantially as there were days where I would complete online personal/skills development courses due to a slight lack of engagements I could get involved in and others where I would be fully occupied with work. Most importantly, there was never a time where I felt overwhelmed at the amount of tasks I had to complete.
I was given responsibility from the outset and was also encouraged to seek out the project/work I was most interested in. I was given full responsibility over work that did not require technical knowledge and was guided through tasks that required a more complex technical understanding, which allowed me to learn along the way.
I have developed skills that I will use during my degree and later life in multiple areas. My communication, presentation and public speaking skills have undoubtedly improved from interacting with and presenting to colleagues on a day-to-day basis as well as my quantitative and analytical skills from completing more technical pieces of work.
The Company
The atmosphere was positive and because my team was on the smaller side, also quite close-knit. People were aware of what projects others were working on, whose birthday it was and there was a sense of team spirit around the office. There was always an opportunity to have some more casual conversations in the office and make sure you’re enjoying work even when it’s a sunny day outside.
The summer internship team were in charge of the all-round coordination of the internship and were good at communicating with the separate EY divisions and smaller teams. Events were well advertised and there were also plenty of opportunities to engage with other teams, network with people and keep yourself occupied.
EY invests a lot into personal training and development and I definitely feel as though I was given the chance to develop skills related to the work that I was doing for the firm as well as more general personal development opportunities through training events and lunch and learn sessions which were presentations on topics such as professional qualifications and emotional resilience.

Working from home
The internship was an invaluable opportunity to understand the work I could be doing as a graduate and also network with potential future colleagues. Furthermore, it puts me in a great opportunity to evaluate future employment prospects. These are appealing and it is also possible to see how career progression would work once inside the organisation.
The Culture
The UK wide induction day was very helpful and was a great way to meet interns working in different offices throughout the UK. There were a few social events put together by the summer internship team within the regional offices which again allowed interns to meet and talk about their experiences, however there would have been room for improvement in this area
Living in London is expensive and you have to be prepared for this. Some socials were subsidised.
London nightlife is great and there is always plenty going on.
Interns were made aware of sports teams, internal networks, the EY Foundation and other groups available to employees. We were encouraged to join these and get involved as much as possible.
