The Role
It was a completely new and exciting experience and great to work in a busy office environment for the first time in a strong team set up.
They were all really supportive and took interest in me and the projects I was working on. Everyone I met in the charity was really friendly and happy to chat about the work they do.
My supervisor was home based but she still kept in really good contact with me over emails, phone calls and meetings. The whole team took on the role of supporting me, always ensuring that there was someone else in the office with me to help if I got stuck.
Some days were a bit boring as there was a lot of waiting around for replies from other people, but I guess that's what business is like. They did try to provide me with other projects though to keep me busy.
I was given a lot of responsibility organising my own event and organising everything there was to do with it.
It gave me an invaluable insight into what it is like to work for a large charity.
The Company
A lot of my team were homebased so when they weren't in the office it could be quite quiet. However when they were there it was an great atmosphere.
The internship was incredibly well organised and everything from training to expenses was well dealt with.
I came into the role wanting to build my event organisational skills and the project they gave me allowed me to do that, while also allowing me to be creative.
Company Parties/Events
They presented themselves very well and gave a good insight into what it would be like to work for them. Furthermore, everyone who I spoke to who worked for the charity had only positive things to say about it.
The Culture
Yes there was a good atmosphere with the other interns and they were all very friendly when we met up. The intern emailing list which Cancer Research UK set up for us made it really easy to contact one another and share experiences.
I was lucky as I was able to live at home during my placement and Cancer Research UK refunded all my travel expenses.
The nightlife was really good and because I was able to live at home it meant I also got to see my home friends a lot as well.
It was made clear to me from the start that I was very welcome to attend any of the Cancer Research UK fundraising events which they put on, including volunteering at Race for Life.
