The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my 6 week stint at EY. My colleagues were incredibly friendly and the Summer Internship Team put a lot of effort into making our scheme as good as possible.
I built a good rapport with my colleagues and they were happy to praise me/acknowledge my work if I did well.
I was assigned a buddy (who was slightly older than me and provided me with informal guidance) and a counsellor (who was my manager/supervisor and supported my formal internship procedures). My buddy was fantastic, she consistently went out of her way to enhance my experience. My counsellor was also great, he really fought my corner and gave me honest and frank advice throughout.
I was occupied throughout. I wasn't overwhelmed, but always had something to do.
I was given responsibility over parts of tasks, but my lack of knowledge/experience prevented me from being totally in charge of things.
I learnt a lot about the area I was working in which will be of great assistance to me in the future, particularly if I return to the same field of work. I also developed a lot of essential soft skills which will help me regardless of where I next work.
The Company
Fairly laid back, very friendly and often funny/enjoyable conversations between co-workers.
Very well organised by EY. They take on c.300 interns every summer, so they run a very well-organised and well-thought-out programme.
We had one day of general inductions to EY and half a day of inductions for our particular service line. It would have been good to have had more technical concepts covered in these sessions however. That said, there were other opportunities to learn and develop in a variety of areas.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Fantastic company with a huge number of opportunities in areas of work and in locations of work. A great route for a comfortable and rewarding career.
The Culture
There were a lot of interns so there was a fairly good social scene. However, EY missed a big opportunity in not organising a single social event for the interns (other than the induction day). It would have been so much better if they had organised a social event in the first week where many of the connections from the induction day could have been reinforced and a social scene firmly established.
It is an expensive area (Canary Wharf) so eating/drinking/living isn't cheap.
A fair few bars around, but not as much choice as in other areas of London.
There were a few opportunities for team drinks and clubs/networks within EY to get involved in activities, e.g. sports teams, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects.
