About You
I enjoyed the scheme very much. Taylor Wessing did a lot to give us a taste of what working at the firm feels like. Everyone I worked with was very much willing to involve me in what they were doing, which I believe is the most important part of a good scheme. People were incredibly welcoming and supportive.
I felt like everyone at the firm really wanted to give me a chance to prove myself, and so really tried to make me feel part of the firm or department. They gave me interesting work, which made me feel like they trusted me and actually wanted to figure out how well I would do on this kind of work.
This really depended on the people, but in general I received quite a lot. People made me feel like I should not be afraid of asking questions, and were very willing to spend a large amount of time explaining something to me. I definitely did not feel like I was lost in the firm and the work.
It was a great taster of what working as a commercial lawyer is like, and even though it was very short and I only explored two departments, it gave me an idea of what area of commercial law I would like to train into. We had many seminars on the different departments which were especially useful. Also, people gave me a lot of feedback which will prove very useful in the future when I will be confronted to the same type of work.
The Company
It was extremely well structured. It felt like a lot of preparation had gone into the vacation scheme, there were many events prepared for us, people were very well aware of our presence and what kind of work we were supposed to do... There was a very good mix of individual and group work, social events, seminars, etc.
The atmosphere was very nice. People were willing to get to know each other, although two weeks is really not a lot to do that. But the social events were fun and people seemed happy to be there. It was nice to feel like it was not a competition but rather a collaboration throughout the scheme. People were very willing to help each other out with advice.
The amount of seminars intended to guide us through the different departments of the firm showed a great deal of investment in our personal training and development. Everything was done to make sure we got the most out of our time there in terms of understanding what we like and what we don't.
The amount of contact time with the people who worked at the firm helped us a lot to understand what it would be like to have full time role with the firm. Both through observing and sharing, I was able to get a good feel of what working there would be like. People were very willing to share about what their work is like.
It helped me understand the work culture very well, as well as the company culture. By spending time with many different people from the firm, I was able to understand what brings them together and how they interact with each other. We were invited to many social events which helped us in that way, and we were encouraged to share with a wide array of people.
It was very helpful. By working during two weeks at the firm, you really get a feel of what being a lawyer at Taylor Wessing is like. Exposure to different types of work, tasks, people, and departments really helps in figuring out future steps and future interests for my career. The extent of involvement in the firm's work was really helpful as it gave us a hands-on experience of what working as a commercial lawyer is like.
Everything Else
The salary for the two weeks was very good, which demonstrates the interest that Taylor Wessing has in giving opportunities to many people to experience the firm, and in truly involving us in the work they do.
There were many opportunities for that. First of all, throughout the scheme they very much encouraged us to go out and talk to various people throughout the firm, even if they were not assigned to us as supervisors or co-workers. Second, there were a few formal opportunities, through networking and social events, to meet with people we would not otherwise have met through our assigned departments.
The networking and social event opportunities were quite good. The ping-pong night was definitely the best, as it really brought people together. The good thing, too, is that the social event opportunities were all with trainees, which was really beneficial in receiving important insight directly from the trainees themselves.
