The Role
I enjoyed my placement, the project was an interesting iconic major project happening in London.
Was given lots of responsibility over a short period of time. I felt my opinions were appreciated, recognised and treated as a positive solution to the project.
Was left to do my own work and solve problems myself. Help was usually available when I requested it however sometimes had to wait and chase people up.
Varies, never super busy. Some days I had deadlines and some days I rattled around with little to do. Due to the nature of the work it was difficult to take on more work. Towards the last week I have found it hard to fill the days with continuous work.
I was given lots of responsibility, once I proved I was capable to undertake the work. Generally treated as equal to the team with my suggestions and opinions listened to I did not feel I was out of my depth.
Undertook some relevant training that will help with my final year of university. Learnt general day to day roles and responsibilities and understood about commercial procedures required to successfully manage works packages.
The Company
I was a JV meaning that two contractors were delivering the scheme. The atmosphere in the office was positive with many people of common interests and working to successfully deliver the scheme.
Generally the placement is well run. Contact with HR and head office is there with the costain checking that everything on the placement is going well. Innovation tasks are undertaken with some tasks being relevant and interesting and others being pointless and a onerous addition.
The company paid for me to undertake SMSTs training which is recognised safety certification within the industry. I also undertook relevant job training.
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Offered an interview at the end of placement, initial feedback seems to suggest I have been recommended for a graduate position. However, I am yet to receive any formal paperwork to confirm this.
The Culture
Not bad, lots of placement students and graduates from both contractors. We had one large social where a free bar was provided and also had a 7 a side kick around on Tuesdays after work.
Didn't live in London
Good
7 a side football, sports day and lots of voluntary causes were pushed to be undertaken within working hours as part of costains voluntary pledge.
