The Role
Metaswitch has a good atmosphere and they go out of the way to give the interns interesting work to do. I had a less coding oriented role than I would have expected at the start of the internship but the work that I did do, in testing, was hugely informative as I hadn't known about it before I came. The Company Houses are really good. They are nice but relatively cheap and mean that finding accommodation during the internship is a doddle.
They were always happy to help and made sure to point things out to me if they felt that I would be interested.
My manager was really good. He was always receptive to questions and was interested in my development. He had a lot of time for me and gave good advice. One of the best things about the placement was how much time my manager put into my development, both directly work related and more personal, such as communication skills.
At times I felt quite busy. I think that the work was at the right level but it was quite easy to fall into the trap of over committing myself to do more work than I could reasonably do. This led to a couple of stressful days during my internship.
I had a variety of small projects to do. Some of these I worked alongside my manager with and others I felt like I had complete ownership of.
The skills that I developed in testing will be useful to any career as a software developer. My manager gave me good guidance and support that is more wide ranging and will be useful in life. I think that the Metaswitch culture of having a meeting with your manager every week and discussing what has gone well and poorly in the last week is really good for self development.
