The Role
Arup is one of the best engineering consultancy companies. I enjoyed the work environment and the social events. People there are friendly and professional. I learned a lot of technical skills which will benefit me in future. I also learned professionalism. It is also a great opportunity to get involved in some great projects. I had a really good time there.
I was started with some easy tasks. After I completed those tasks, they started to give me more challenging tasks. In the end, I was doing the tasks which were the same level difficulty as other graduate engineers. They tried to let me do different kinds of tasks, so that I could enhanced my ability on various area. Except doing technical works, I also contacted the manufacture.
When I just joined the company, my supervisor helped me to familiar the company. She had several conversations with me every a few months to ketch up with me. In Arup, there is also an appraiser to help each engineer to plan there personal skills development. I always talked to them if I want some more challenging works. They were always willing to help me.
I think working at Arup needs a strong planning skill. I need to plan my tasks and estimate the time in advance. If the planning is accurate, the daily work load should be just the right amount. I concentrated on my work at day time, and rarely need to work after office hour.
In the beginning, I was only given some simple tasks. After I completed those tasks, they knew I was able to do some more challenging tasks, so my responsibility in the team became more and more important. In the end, I think they treat me the same as other graduate engineers.
I learned many technical skills. These skills can only be learned by real projects and when the projects get complicated. I learned professionalism from other engineers behaviors, and this will benefit me in any company. I gained organising skill by organise an event in Arup. All the skills I learned in Arup will benefit me a lot in future.
The Company
Every people there were very friendly. They always willing to help me or teach me if I have any difficulty. There are many lunch time talks and after work events. These are good opportunities to meet new friends. People there are also enthusiastic of their jobs. They like to solve challenging problems.
The overall work placement was organised very well. I had an administrator to give me a general introduction of Arup on the first day. She told me who is my supervisor and explained a bit about my team. My supervisor asked me about which specific area I was interested to work with. I also had an appraisal session to set goals for the following half year.
Arup let me to go to an English class. That class contained 13 lessons. They also allow me to learn the software during working time. I also had an appraisal session to make some objectives for the next half year. Through the appraisal me and the appraiser needed to agree some tasks which could help me to achieve my objectives.
