The Role
Could not have asked for a better set of people to work with, everyone was willing to help me grow my knowledge of not only the company but also banking in general. Been a pleasure to be part of such a prestigious firm in the banking industry.
This has to be one of the best parts of the internship, even though I was only there 8 weeks actually feeling part of a team was something that became clear to me early on in my internship. Colleagues respected what you did and didn't know and helped develop you in areas which you didn't know/area of weakness.
There wwere central supervisors at the head office who over looked the internship as a whole and we're there available to call/email when you felt appropriate. Working in a branch I had my branch manager who for myself was extremely useful, any point in the day I could go over to him and ask any question I wanted. Not only my branch manager but everyone on my branch were there to give support and guidance if I so needed it.
It did vary day on day, even sometimes week on week. There was so much to learn through looking at all different sort of mortgages whether they were freehold/flying freehold or credit, looking into how the bank rated it's clients through their financial powers of resistance and risk of financial strain. I would say along with an internship project, the day to say branch learning kept me busy and there was not a time I was sat bored/not knowing what to do.
Responsibilty was buit up for obvious reasons during the internship, so obviously towards the end my responsibility was greater. I was given my own daily tasks which did matter to the company so pressure was at some points quite high. Clearly I wasn't given substantial responsibility because of the duration of my internship but I did feel i played a crucial role.
It will be useful to use some of the things I have learnt across the internship in my degree, studying economics and having a several banking modules I feel this insight will help me in my final year of studies.
The Company
In my branch there was a laid back and relax atmosphere yet everyone always seemed to be busy it was strange. It was such a close knit branch, everyone got on and everyone was there to help on another if there were any issues at all. Working with another 8 people it was quite a small team meaning individuals who worked there had more responsibility in their roles so they were diligent in their work.
In terms of myself it was well organised we had a structure routine of having conference calls with other interns and head office to see how the placement was going and a broad structure of the internship programme in general. I did know one of the interns who got put in an office where they were in the middle of moving to a different location and his experience was slightly less so banking orientated, but for myself I was more than happy with the experience.
I would feel privialidge if I got offered a job there, it was a fully enjoyable experience and a working environment that I would love to be a part of. They mention that they need to start recruiting the younger generation and build them up through the firm, so after completing final year at uni, with the experience which I have already had, I can only seek positives for working for handelsbanken in the future.
The Culture
All employees seemed to get on well there was no arguments, there was disagreementa but there always is in business. The opprtuinity with the interns to meet up and social was lacking, the only opportunity we got is when we ourselves organised to meet up to work on the group project, apart from then we never really met up.
