The Role
Overall the placement was good. I feel I learnt a lot from the people around me. There was a disagreement between the senior engineer and the construction manager which made my placemetn less enjoyable as the site engineers often got stuck in the middle of their disgreements. Everyone else I worked with were great.
I felt valued by the team I worked closely with on site but rarely conversed with the my manager in the office. This is because of the difference in location between the main office and site. In the on site team though I felt very included in the team and felt valued by them.
My manager was based in the main office and I was rarely there as i was on site and hence I got very little guidance bar on rare scheduled occasions. I was given lots of support by the on site engineers as well as the guys on site who were all happy to help me with everything.`
The site seemed to have too many engineers assigned to it. There were 2 main site engineers where there could be one, hence there wasn't much work for me to do as it was spread thinly between the many engineers. There were busier days/ times of days but in general I didn't have loads to do. This is in comparison to the placement I did last year.
I was given responsibility but not as much as my previous placement with the company as I didn't have much to do. When I did have stuff to you I was often left to do it on my own where I could and even supervised the assistant engineer on site, giving them direction.
Civil Engineering courses often focus on the consulting side of the job. Placements, especially in contracting, help to visualize whether this is something you might want to go into after Uni which i find every helpful. I also learn skills that will help me in my future years at uni.
The Company
In the on site office the atmosphere was great. Everyone got on really well and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The only downs in atmosphere came when there was a disagreement between the senior engineer and construction manager but they were rarely in the onsite office together
If you get multiple placements with getting a job with the company then you have a good chance of getting a job with them. They prioritize you when it comes to graduate opportunities and you get early interviews. The job is not guaranteed though it is just more likely. Overall the company gives good future job prospects for their placements.

I lived at home but the cost of travel was high. Also there wasn't really any food places nearby bar the weatherspoons which you couldn't get to in the time of the break, everywhere else you had to drive to but these places were all expensive.
