The Role
I had a fantastic time during my 6 weeks at Grant Thornton. Everyone made me feel extremely welcome and included in the work that was going on, as well as social activities.
I really felt I was helping my colleagues and that they were grateful for the work I was doing.
I couldn't have asked for more support! There was a great network of people that I could have asked for guidance - my buddy, my manager and my HR contact were all extremely supportive.
As with all work the busy periods came and went, but at no point did I feel that I had nothing to do or that I was overwhelmed with work.
I was given much more responsibility than I expected to have, which really made me feel valued by the team and it was great to get stuck in to the real work and a couple of projects.
Although my degree subject is fairly unrelated to the work I was involved in during my placement, the experience that I gained of working in that environment will be invaluable in the future when I go on to work full time.
The Company
Although it was a professional office environment, everyone was extremely friendly and willing to stop for a chat if you needed them.
I was impressed with the induction that the summer interns received when we arrived, and the internship was well structured with catch up meetings and training/insight days to attend.
The stand out of this internship for me was the "Developing your business impact" training course that all the interns were sent on. It was a 2 day course with accommodation included that focused on improving our presentation and communication skills, which was really great for personal development.
Subsidised Canteen
Having been offered the grad job to start in a year's time, I can't wait to get started and be back at Grant Thornton. The culture of the firm and its people really stood out for me and I wouldn't consider applying anywhere else!
The Culture
The interns went out for drinks on occasion and almost always had lunch together. There were a couple of social activities organised by Grant Thornton which helped to break the ice and get to know people, and after that we made friends easily!
The cost of living was high, which isn't surprising in central London! The cost of socialising on the other hand was less than I expected from what I'd heard about London prices, so I was pleasantly surprised.
There were a few bars around the office which colleagues sometimes went to, and of course bing in the centre of London you're never far away from anything!
I was invited to take part in sporting activities outside of work which I thought was a great way to get involved and socialise with colleagues.
