The Role
I was placed in Finance and had no previous experience at all with this area. However I had an amazing team and line manager who really brought me up to speed and I was able to learn so much from them.
I was given more and more responsibility as time went on which was great. I felt like I contributed to the team effort and didn't feel like just the intern sitting with them. I really found my feet just as I was leaving, if only I could have stayed with them longer.
My team were very patient with me. They answered all my questions and helped me if I was unsure. I would have preferred more feedback so I knew I was on track, however I understood my team could be very busy at times.
I felt work was reasonably slow at the beginning but rather than sitting about doing nothing, I reached out to others in different departments through the mentor scheme which allowed me to get a feel for RBS as a whole. Work within my department really picked up towards the end and I had to manage my time well between tasks, my team project and our CSR challenge.
Like I mentioned previously, as I became more settled within my team I was given a lot of responsibility.
I had the best time at RBS. Thoroughly enjoyed working within Finance, an area I would never have thought to go into but I will now definitely look into for the future. I feel like the values RBS hold align well with mine.
The Company
Since it was summer and holiday time, the team within the office were usually quite busy since others were away. Some days everyone was completely head down in work. That being said, we tried to make it out for a walk each lunch time for a time out.
Organisation and help from HR were good during the internship however I had no idea what work I was going to be doing, who my team were etc until my first day. The internship specific training didn't help much with my day to day work.
I would love to go back to RBS. It's a really good atmosphere and a good place to work. All of the people within my department, my buddy and others I met along the way were always so helpful and willing to help me network or chat with me or show me around.
The Culture
My team organised lunches and walks for us to go on which was nice for us to all get to know each other better. There were events put on for the interns like a ghost tour and treasure hunt, Payday drinks with the Grads and various sports groups to join. I was living outside of Edinburgh for the duration and felt this was a disadvantage at times.
Fringe time!
