The Role
I found it quite tough at first as I wasn't sure where to go with my project. But once I found my feet things got a lot better!
I was working on a genuine issue that needed to be addressed. Due to this my input was valued.
Yes, you were given support and guidance by your manager, but only if you asked for it. I found that I got the most guidance from the people I was workingon the project with.
You really need to make your own headway in Rolls-Royce. To that end, you are as busy as you want to be! I wanted to deliver on my project, so keeping myself busy wasn't a problem!
It was my responsibility to finish my project on time! I was working on a real problem that needed resolved so in that respect I was given a fair amount of responsibilty.
At Rolls-Royce you are required to deliver an end of placement presentation to a host of managers. This and your day to job role develops your confidance and many other skills that are key in a professional business environment.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly yet professional. I found that the guys on the shop floor had the best banter though!
At Rolls-Royce East Kilbride the placements are mainly run by the HR department in Derby. The over all placement, especially the induction in Derby, was very well run! However, some aspects that applied to the site only, such as letting the team that you were going to work with know that you were coming and having a desk ready for you, were less well organised.
There was not much in the way of specific courses for personal development or training, apart form learning about Rolls-Royce's core technology. However, I was only there for 10 weeks so the whole experince was like a training and development course from my perspective.
Above 25 days holiday
Rolls-Royce would be a good company to work for, providing that you got into the right part of the business and job role to satisfy your personal career aims. For example, some of the engineering roles don't envolve much engineering but more planning and people management.
The Culture
I stayed at my flat, so this wasn't really an issue.
Well all the Glasgow has to offer, so pretty good!
Only activities that we organised ourselves. One of the other interns I was working with organised a charity skydive!
