About You
The Company
We were given small-group training in IT and legal research, which enabled me to complete my assignments much more smoothly. There were also finance and corporate case studies, which trained me to think more critically and from multiple perspectives.
To ensure that we had optimum exposure to real-life work at the firm, we rotated between teams every week, such that we would have a taste of the firm's different practices and be better able to decide whether the firm was right for us.
Being able to talk to employees at various levels of the firm and the partners has given me a grasp of the general atmosphere of the firm and the qualities they look for in lawyers. Working in different departments had also shown to me the friendly, approachable attitude of people.
By allowing me to get in touch with different people at the firm and providing ample opportunities to experience the work done by the firm, the vacation scheme allowed me to make an informed decision as to whether being a commercial solicitor was the right career, and whether Hogan Lovells were the right firm, for me.
Everything Else
Each vacation student would be assigned a trainee buddy, and each department had a designated trainee buddy, who would invite us to have lunches and go out with them. The firm also organised numerous socials and nights out for us to get to know each other better. Weekly partner lunches enabled us to speak to partners in a more casual setting.
I participated in a wide variety of events, including the Thames RIB Experience, regular socials and nights out with fellow vacation scheme students and trainees, as well as weekly partner lunches.
There were informative presentations on different activities that employees of the firm could engage in outside of work, ranging from volunteering to sports.
I would definitely recommend the Hogan Lovells vacation scheme to anyone who wishes to gain insights to the workings of an international law firm, as it contains the right mixture of exposure to real-life work of a commercial solicitor, enabling us to find out whether the firm is right for us through lots of opportunities to talk to trainees, associates and partners, while also ensuring that we had lots of fun.
