The Role
Great having responsibility for your own project, and feeling you really added value to the company
Had a few gatherings outside work including a BBQ, and always had lunch together. It was great to get to know the team on a personal basis as well as working relationships.
I had two different supervisors, one for the technical work and also one for my personal development. I had weekly meetings with both which were pretty informal, and i felt they were both very easy to approach!
I was involved with a few different projects, some of which I choose to do on top of my individually assigned projects. I like being kept busy so this was great for me! What I liked about the internship, for me personally, I was not given a company laptop so this meant that when I left the office I couldn't do work. Different to uni when I feel like I should be constantly doing work!
I was given complete responsibility for my own two projects. I had people around to assist me if I needed it. I was also able to get involved with a couple of bigger projects going on in the factory, where I was able to not only watch their execution but get involved and have my own jobs to do.
The skills I learnt will really help for my final year at uni - I learnt how to separate my time between work and personal life. I worked a lot on my personal development such as trying to worry less about what others think of me, and being honest, which was an important lesson. People at Mars were so unhand to help me with this, and it is a skill that I will use throughout life. The technical information I learnt will also help me with elective studies I chose this year.
The Company
People were all pretty busy but always had time for a quick chat and a coffee.
It had a good structure - each intern had an individual project assigned as well as group one which kept us all in communication and helped develop a strong support network.
I didn't go on any courses, but received a lot of personal development help from my line manager, and got feedback from a lot of people in the office.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
At the end of the placement they hold an panel to get onto their graduate scheme. I had to prepare a presentation, and people in the office had previously been in similar situations so were really helpful with helping me prepare.
The Culture
As an engineering team we had a couple of social events outside of work. The other interns on site (marketing and sales) went for night outs quite often and worked from home the next day, but I didn't join as much as I don't function well when I'm too tired!
Cheaper than London prices! I managed to get a good deal with my rent and the travel into work each day was really cheap. Theres a train station about a 15min walk to the office so the train was my only travel expense!
There were a lot of pubs and bars in Maidenhead, and Windsor is close but I tended to be away most weekends so didn't experience it!
A lot of the interns went to the gym together after work, and had dinner/drinks. The engineering team had a couple of social gatherings too whilst I was there.
