    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time with the Logistics department. I was given some really interesting projects and tasks. Working within a department where you have a real passion for the work they do doesn’t feel like work! Seeing the different roles of the centralised logistics operation is great as during my placement I was involved in the regional logistics operation.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues throughout my time in the department. The work and projects I was asked to complete was reducing the workload of other members in the team. Due to my experience in one of the regions I was often asked to look at projects relating to that region. I was able apply my knowledge and experiences to evaluate if certain projects would be beneficial, and if not, where improvements and changes can be made.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues throughout my time in the department. The work and projects I was asked to complete was reducing the workload of other members in the team. Due to my experience in one of the regions I was often asked to look at projects relating to that region. I was able apply my knowledge and experiences to evaluate if certain projects would be beneficial, and if not, where improvements and changes can be made.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy every day throughout my time in the department. Whenever I had finished work/ projects there would always be more work for me to do. Deadlines were set throughout; working towards these did sometimes mean my workload was heavier on certain days but not by too much.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a considerable amount of responsibility during my internship. For example I was given a number of different proposals to evaluate put one of them forward to be actioned. I never felt that the work I was given was something just to ‘take up my time’. All my work was important for the department and will be used to make decisions in the future.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills that I’ve developed during my internship will help me greatly beyond my studies. In a short amount of time I’ve improved upon my analytical, evaluation and communication skills. Without a doubt these skills will also assist me when completing my final year of study. The work I have been doing is different to what was involve in during my placement, so this change made it more challenging and my development has been aided by this.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great in the office, it was focused yet sociable. Everyone is concentrating on what they need to get done but having conversations with other colleagues. Every member of staff within the department made me feel welcome and part of the team from the start. As mentioned previously I felt comfortable asking colleagues questions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall the internship was well set up. The team knew about my arrival and work had already been organised prior to my start date. Additionally accommodation was organised for me while I working for the department. For my first week I did not have a permanent desk but there was always a spare computer for me to use. From my second week onwards I had a permanent desk.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was limited training due to the nature of the work but the department were interested in my personal development. Projects and tasks that I was asked to work on were more complex than work I had done previously. This in turn pushed me to develop my skills and improve the way I approach tasks or projects.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects within Lidl are very appealing and they are keen for the former placement students to apply for roles. There are a number of positions I am looking into applying for once I graduate and the graduate schemes that they offer are also very appealing. The fact that you’ve worked for the company means that you have some really valuable contacts to reach out to in the future and experiences to learn from

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene amongst my colleagues. As team we would go out for a drink after work on a Friday and when a member of staff was leaving their position we organised a night out.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was cheap as the company paid for my hotel accommodation and I had a daily subsistence allowance. The only cost I paid for was driving to the hotel and back to my house weekly. This was a relatively small cost considering what the company were already paying for me.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Being based in South West London for my internship meant there were plenty of places to go to after work and many bars and pubs in the immediate area of the office.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Working for Lidl there are always opportunities for raising money for a charity. As mentioned previously there were a number of opportunities to have a drink with the team at the end of the week.
